In response to your final comments: I think it's very understandable that this didn't take off in fandom spaces because it's NOT shippy. It's not romantic. It's tragedy and realism and that's never been big with fandom. It's something I love but it goes on the shelf with things like Black Sails (for me) which I adore but am not shippy about. And it's also come at a very conservative time in mainstream culture where a lot of people won't watch it because it's gay shit. I watched this show literally in ONE SITTING the first day it released in the UK because I found it so compulsive. It's literally MY SHIT.

I agree that the pacing slowed down from ep 5 on but I appreciate that bc. it is giving more room to the scheming and the juggling of many threads. To see more of Coke, Bacon and Charles one need scenes with them and show their conflicts and machinations. I think the show suffered mostly bc of the different release dates. In the UK it was March, in the US it was on a weekly basis starting May. In some European countries they start now. So, it isn't as bingeable as other shows and that takes some momentum away. My rewatches center around different things, sometimes the framing, the door shots, the costumes, or just looking at the lighting settings on George (dark, half-shadow, light).

2024-06-10 15:29:52 +0000 UTCif you look it up, there are many letters that have been found between james and george that illustrates that there was real love and affection between the two of them (with james calling george his darling child and wife) - nicholas has also said in interviews that whilst george’s love did start out as very transactional and a means for him for acquire power, that his feelings shifted into genuine love and care for james as time went on - there was also a lot of speculation at the time surrounding george being responsible for james’ death and poisoning him but it isnt true, george verifiably wasn’t in england when james died and he reportedly wept for days straight and had to be comforted by charles when he heard the news - easily nick’s best work to date he was absolutely incredible in this series showing george’s shift as a character over the course of the series, tony and julianne were obviously incredible as well!
