Whilst not exactly necessary they do add a lot of lore, particularly Torchwood, to your Doctor Who experience. https://www.geekyregards.com/p/doctor-who-complete-nuwhoniverse.html The minisodes are 5-10 minutes long and can be found on YT. As was explained when a Time Lord dies he is able to reconfigure himself which means he looks and acts differently whilst still remembering who and what he knows! Nice trick! This is one of the ways Doctor Who has survived so long...so when one actor decides to leave they just cast a new one. Christopher Eccleston is the ninth actor (7 from the Classic series and 1 from a TV movie in the 90's) to play the Doctor and is often just referred to as '9' and his replacement David Tennant is referred to as '10'.
