0248 - Mother

You may have noticed this lady in the last post, she speaks second. According to the subtitles her line is "Wear your galoshes!", which I never would have been able to decipher.

One thing we have not mentioned in our discussion of this episode is that it remains the most watched episode ever, with 33 million viewers on its original airing. For comparison, an average season 34 episode would get less than 4 million viewers - often less than 1 million.

Obviously repeated viewings mean that "Bart Gets An F" is not necessarily the single most watched episode in perpetuity, but it is also entirely possible that more human beings have seen this single appearance mother character than have seen a later character such as Gil or the Yes Guy.

I think it was marketed as a proper "event", being the first episode after a big break, so Simpson-mania was at a high for sure. I didn't have Sky either so I would have watched this several years later on BBC2, it would have been just another episode to me at the time.

Back when The Simpsons was first airing on Sky, and the nation was going through its first major bout of Simpson-mania, I had no way to actually watch it because I didn't have Sky. Friends of ours who did recorded two episodes onto VHS for us - this one, and Blinky The Three Eyed Fish. So it's sort of reassuring that the episide I've watched more than any other (albeit on grainy VHS 30yrs ago or whatever) is also the most watched generally.
