I managed to have an evening to sit again after a solid week of appointments on top of work itself to sit and clean up some of the nagging problems I had with this picture. Its likely the next one to be painted, as I'm very interested in trying to do a dual pattern coat (Beraclewan, the Lorrnathi guy, is a paint 'vanner' sort of style) and that bright orange/brown vulpine colour on Jahri (The little pointing critter!).
The main issues I had were largely just angle and some anatomical problems. I wanted to lean Jahri in a little more so I captured that moment of her pointing and yelling 'You ass! I don't live here!". I'm trying to get a bit more animated with my characters. I'll never be on the style of cartoons, but I wanted a more conversational flow between her pointing accusingly and Bera leaning on the counter, casually waving a hand, and replying "Not with that attitude, you don't."
Bera was driving me a bit loopy. His muzzle wasn't sitting right to me, and the ears felt a little too far out to the sides so I managed to find and actually import a 3d horse skull and angle it similar to what his head would have been at, and reference based off of that. It worked pretty well I think! The eyes are different between a Lorrnath and horse, but its close enough to satisfy my creative OCD.
I also had to work on the mess that was his abdomen and pectorals. The original had the pecs too high up, despite him being leaned back. I overcompensated and the lean would have been way too far given its supposed to be fairly casual. The abdomen was just temporarily tossed on there as if it was a jumble of landmarks to denote 'front of person'. I looked up some refs and made the musculature flow a lot better than it did before.
I'll be doing a colour treatment of this after I get last month's sketch underway. I'm going to be working nights doing art now that (most) of my absurd amount of medical appointments are over (save a couple next month), and the work schedule has also finally calmed down to the point where I can just chill out and scribble things.
I'll be announcing the next sketch on the list (a new person, hello!) the beginning of December, and will be working steadily on catching up again as I'm about 2 weeks behind still.
Did November even exist? Its almost gone already o.o
