The Old Way - Sketchwork

I was listening to 'History Amplified' style music over the weekend and sketching.  Normally its too spastic and scribbly to share but this one stood out a bit since it deals with fleshing out the old, old early days of The Lorrnathi people.

Plus it has Cinders.. walking a pumpkin, and wearing a new hat.

I've been reading deeper into proto-Germanic tribes, Gaulish and Celtibrian languages and cultures and the more of the little artifacts I found, the more I wanted to add.  I see the Lorrnathi using the symbology of the cave/rock paintings found through early Western Europe, a place that lends will to the primordial, dark forests and connections with the Natural world.

I've been toying with bringing back the early Gods of the Lorrnath.  They were a people who systematically turned their backs on their old Gods, effectively history reads it as 'killing' them.

But you can't truly kill the Gods.

They're just now starting to appear again.  Overjoyed to have their names remembered in the hearts of their children, to have them spoken aloud, to feel connection to the material again.

The Lorrnath of the Aegencald began to prosper again.  The century of shame, of darkness, of being the race that sided with the infernal started to wash away as old ways were opened once more.

Healing.

Hoping to have more to show on the painting in the works.  Its slow going unfortunately.  Weather is a big factor (its unbelievably humid here which actually really screws with tablets I've come to find out), as is the fact that we're having cement being put in and had to take a full week to clear out junk from house and garage.  Fun!

But I'll gladly share more of these weird little sketches as well.  I try not to work them too much since they lose a lot of their spontaneous/informative nature when I do that.

Oh, a last note, Cinders hat is actually inspired by the head-wear worn by Maria Franz performing in Heilung.  I found the music absolutely fantastic, and it spurred me off on searching for those ancient connections, lost as they may be.

Cinders likes the hat.  It has danglebeeps.

Cheers! and indeed, they've got a very primeval 'iron age' vibe to them that really caught with me. And it fit so well with the Lorrnath that I had to start sketching out some of those symbols :)

Very cool. I'm going to have to listen to Heilung and get more reference for where you're pulling all this from. Feels very "old world" and solid. Thank you for sharing this and pointing me in new directions to research and explore.

Very cool! I love those sort of histories that can have hundreds if not a thousand years attached to them. Ones of migration, mixing cultures, sparking new branches. My own history, at least going by family names is a bit of a scattershot of everything from Danish/Swedish/Scottish/Irish and Anglo Saxon. I wonder if its why part of the proto-Germanic and Helvetic really pull at me. There will be more added. I have pages of these little squiggles that were quickly sketched out as reminders. I just need to actually try and compile them a bit better (posting 2 napkins, 20 different bits of paper and a page of digital things would be chaotic at the least).

And here I am wishing I could write better :) I'll admit I loved rummaging old rock-paintings and symbols from the ancient days. So much of this was derive from those symbols but it fit the 'Old Lorrnathi' so well. I can only hope the copyright has run out from 500BC :D

That's roughly the time I found out about them myself. About a week ago I'd seen the thumbnail for one of their live videos for the hundredth time and finally gave it a look. I don't tend to like much of the 'viking' metal/music since it often breaks down into songs about gods smashing things, battles, or rampant drinking without going any deeper into the broad spectrum of meaning, and instead cherry-picking the 'dark' things out of history. Which is fine if that's what folks want, but I don't need to hear the 50th song about how Odin will destroy us all etc. I find it a bit too 'comic book history' for my likes. Heilung actually surprised me. I certainly loved the clothing and traditional instruments from the start, but the music is definitely more about the deeper old history etched in stone and wood. And I absolutely hear you about finding more authentic Polynesian music/history. When I was looking into the culture for the Tides comic years back, there were all of these little fragments interlaced with either Westernised ideals or accounts from missionaries (which are always widly biased and rarely record what happened). There's more than just ukuleles and tiki torches. Just recently learning about the Night Marches and Gods/Goddesses was pretty eye opening. Best we can do is take the fragments that remain and enjoy the heck out of them :)

Our family is Transylvania Saxon and the deep, rich history has always fascinated me. I'll be watching with great interest.

THIS! This is why I wish I could draw better. The symbolism and art of the world tell much about the people in it. I can tell the tales, but I am not so great at the symbols of myth.

That's just too funny. My wife recently (within the last week) stumbled into Heilung on Youtube. We thought, 'this is weird, but kinda cool.' After listening to some more, then reading up on them, we really started to get into the music. I'm always digging into older 'Tribal' and 'Folk' style music. It is soooo hard to find anything halfway authentic, especially polynesian without freakin' ukuleles in them...
