1 uninteresting, mildly interesting & very interesting thing

One uninteresting thing

I got an extra ball in my dishwasher tablet. This means that there is a ball-less dishwasher tablet out there somewhere, which is a cause for pointless concern that I think we should all partake in.

One mildly interesting thing

I finally got my green card and I am now officially a permanent resident of the United States of America! Guns! Eagles! Poorly functioning democratic institutions! I'm here for all of it!

One very interesting thing

Last week, Monthly opened up enrollments for my online build class! As someone who has had a lot of pride in being thoroughly un-educational, this is a huge step forward.

It's basically a 30 day class where I teach absolutely every detail about how I come up with ideas, prototype and build projects. It's very hands-on, so everyone who participates gets to build two projects of their own from scratch. We filmed it in December, and crammed a crew of TWELVE PEOPLE into my workshop for a week. It was a blur and a flurry, but so much fun and I can't wait for the class to start.

Here's the deal: the class costs $249, and I know that's pricy. But I really want as many of you to be able to take it as possible. So I paid for 10 seats in full, out of my own shitty robot pocket, just in case any of you wanted to join but couldn't afford it. Send me a DM here on Patreon if you're interested.

For the rest of you, normal enrollments are open until March 25th if you want to join! I can't wait to see what you make in class! I built this funky-looking thing. Appreciate any guesses as to what it is in the comments.

XOXO
Simone

OMG I DIDN'T REALIZE I COULD GET GLOBAL ENTRY NOW!!! You just made my day!

Simone Giertz

wow you got me

Simone Giertz

I just hope it knows that it's in our hearts and minds

Simone Giertz

Did you make a fruit bowl? Seems basic but I think my mom had one like that at some point.

Heidi Roth

just over here googling "what is trifle"

Simone Giertz

This is such a good note and info. Thank you so much for taking the time to write it out! One good thing is that my class size is going to be a lot smaller than Casey's, so I'll have more time per student. And after reading this, I'll make sure to try to check in and feedback projects as much as possible!

Simone Giertz

Super fun that you've put together a class people can take and get to know your process. One thing you and anyone considering taking the class should be aware of: I took the Monthly filmmaking class from Casey Neistat, which was very interesting and I learned a ton while getting this really cool behind-the-scenes look at his creative process. All of that was fabulous. Where the experience fell short was how all of us students were left to fend for ourselves in terms of getting feedback on our own projects. Peer reviews aren't very valuable when your peers are just as new and clueless as you are, and this is especially problematic when you're doing something complex like making a movie or inventing things. For many of us, this left us feeling like we paid a really high price for access to some videos, but didn't get any meaningful feedback on our work or progress and didn't get even token interaction with our instructor or their team. For me personally, this left a bad taste in my mouth because it felt like a money grab, not a real course. I know that's not your or even Casey's vibe, but that's how it felt using Monthly. They present these programs as though you're going to learn from someone you admire (which you are), but the complete lack of interaction with anyone who knows what they're doing — whether that's you or someone on your staff — who could field occasional questions or give more meaningful feedback on people's work would transform that experience. Monthly doesn't account for this student/teacher interaction AT ALL and it's a huge miss, IMO, especially at $250. Here on Patreon I'm able to have this direct interaction with you for a tiny fraction of that cost. It doesn't entitle me to any of your time, but there is at least a mechanism where we can communicate if you choose to. I can have strong confidence that even if you don't respond to this comment, you probably saw it. That's not nothing. So here is my suggestion: get involved with your students if you can, even in just some small way. Taking 5 min to acknowledge someone's efforts or give meaningful feedback would mean the world to these people who admire your work and have taken a month out of their life to learn from you. That lack of interaction in the class I took left it feeling like we got drawn in to learn from someone famous, but they weren't really there. It kinda felt like they just cashed their check and walked. I know that's not how you'd choose to do this, so just know that there's a huge opportunity and that for most people, just knowing that you saw their project would mean the world to them. I didn't expect that Casey Neistat and I would have some sort of extended interaction or become friends or something, but to get nothing was a huge disappointment and that felt baked into how Monthly structures these things. To have simply known that he took an afternoon to watch our little movies would have been really cool, but as far as I know, that never happened. Good luck and thanks for taking the time to teach what you know. Yours is such a unique POV on making and inventing. Long live the queen.

Fruit basket? Lamp shade?

Fred van der Windt

Glad you got your card! And „shitty robot money“ would be the best name for a crypto currency ever!

Florian Reiser

The last picture looks like the beginnings of a trifle sculpture. Do they even have trifle in Sweden (or the USA) ??

That poor dishwasher tablet that lost a ball!! I hope it doesnt feel empty without it

Emma Coogan

Congrats on the Green Card! And, it's obviously a tortilla bowl form.

Don Evans

Congratulations on your Green Card! And the course! I'm hoping it will run again in the future as I'm busy with work this time around. Hope it does well and everyone has a blast!!

nitech

Congrats on the green card! Sounds like a bigger deal to me then just "mildly" interesting. It's awesome to see you "level up" and go from Queen of shitty robots to building amazing usable builds, to having your own course. You have every right to be super proud of that! I don't have time for it, but I'm still sad that I'll miss all the awesome content of two builds that look super interesting. I did the course of Mark Rober and I now feel like I could've better used that money, time and energy for your course (even though at that time yours didn't exist yet). With Mark Rober, I feel like he became more repetitive and less inspiring around the time his course launched. So on some nonsensical level I'm scared that you will too. In case you were planning on doing that, please don't. Please stay as fresh, sparkling and original as you are! Keep doing weird and random things!

Geerten

Well done on the Green Card and also, what a great idea to run those courses. The doover in your hand is clearly a defluffer for an elephant's navel!

Mousegreening

Congratulations all around, esp. on the extra ball. Du har millimeterna på din sida. 🍀

Paul Soderdahl

Hype on the green card! Why do washing tablets look so much like candy? Also that thing looks like a coffee bean flower crown

Emily M

Huge congrats on the green card! Still waiting for mine :p

Ruby Chen

Congrats on the green card! That's a major accomplishment. Also, the funky-looking thing is clearly a hat. Or a flower-petal lampshade. ...Or a flower-petal lampshade hat.

Dave Madison

I got a tablet with no ball! Glad it found a good home. Congratulations on your green card!

Joe Langley

Congrats on the green card! FYI, don't put it in the wash it will turn blue ;)

Marie Louise Meyer

Congratulations on the Green Card. I am a fairly chill person so when I got mine it didn’t feel like a massive change in my life, then weirdly the paperwork said i could own a firearm which felt odd. BUT the first time I came through immigration in the fast moving line, and the TSA agent treated me nicely and said “welcome home” I had a little lightbulb go off. Now go get Global Entry to simplify your flying :)

Brian Irwin

I actually got your Monthly ad at the top of a YouTube video today and it was genuinely the only time I've been happy to see an ad. Very excited for you!!

Noah Jay

Watch the linked trailer! In it you can see quite well what the funky looking thing is meant for. Will not spoil here.😁 Great gesture that you sponsor the class for your patreons! Simone, did you have creative freedom in terms of text, presentation and humor? So is your style recognizable or is it tamed🙃? How did you handle crafting in front of so many people, since you mentioned a few times that you prefer to have your own time while building?

Edgar Ernst

Congratulations and welcome! As an American let me greet you with a traditional ditty that your dishwasher incident made me think of. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitler_Has_Only_Got_One_Ball

Edward Iglesias

Congratulations on the class, and for the green card! You know, Sweden and U.S. both allow dual citizenship...just a reminder. You & I probably wouldn't agree on many social issues, but...America needs more people like you in it! Glad you're a permanent resident.

Tree Carcass Mangler

I would love to be one of the pre-paid people in your class, because I am disabled and could never afford it, however, since I can’t even figure out how to message you in Patreon (I’ve messaged others before, but I’m too dumb to do it right now this time) I’m going to let someone else more apt (is that a word?) take this spot. Good luck, nameless person! And good luck on the class you’ve already filmed!

Ken Board

I can only assume that's a bowl to store some ammo, now that you're a fully fledged US resident. Congrats on all the things - especially the extra ball, I mean wow your dishes must be sparkling now

Dom

Dude! You're awesome! Congrats on the card. Merica! Now you can feel completely entitled for no other reason.

Chad McIntyre

Amazing gesture on the pre-paid tickets. I'd love to watch your classes but feel there are more deserving people here for your assistance. I spend too much money on my own projects... Really need to finish one at some point

Russell Peake

What a kindness!
