Why I've been feeling down (don't worry it's not very dramatic)
Added 2022-01-26 22:12:05 +0000 UTC
My New Year's Resolution is to make more friends and try to build more community! I think that would help a lot.
PS. I've been thinking of starting a Patreon Discord, is that something you'd be in to?
I think a Discord where people could chat would be great! Get several makers in there and it could be a support structure for those wanting to learn how to build.

Thanks for sharing this - I feel similar in a lot of ways. Creating community as an adult is hard and I've had to be extremely intentional about it. Humans need other humans around! We were not built to be alone for too long. I worry about that as a creator - so I also try to create community instead of things!

Thanks for opening a vein and sharing:) We’ve all been there and the struggle is real. Makers make, but the brain likes to play tricks on creative people, especially when the reward system is in place.
I’m not saying what you should do, but some of the positive things you spoke about are your family and community in Sweden. What’s something you could make yourself that reminds you of those things and people. Make something just for you. It doesn’t have to be a big viral thing that’s ties to all the other great expectations you have for yourself and career and team, it just has to be true to who you are as a creative maker full of doubts and insecurities- which most of us relate to. You’ll get there :) because you know you can’t stop making things.

The fear is real. As a fellow content creator that makes (somewhat) specialized videos, it's always front of mind that I'll lose people's interests with lackluster project ideas and it's easy to death spiral thinking about it. Sadly, YT hasn't really set any of us up for success, so it's a real concern to have. Thankfully, you always come through with humor, and whether you crush it on the build or not doesn't matter.

😊 Yes, read books! Listen to music! Sing! Just chill and absorb other people’s art. The inspiration will come when you’re thinking about other things. Always follow what YOU like, not what we might like. You’ll be ok. ❤️

You have inspired me to really push myself in my career…I like to watch your videos to pump myself up and think creatively in my software engineering job. I am happy to be on your patreon to support you. I’m sorry you miss your home in Sweden…I hope you are able to find some community here in the US. You are grounded and intelligent I am happy to have found your work. Tack!

Simone, I joined your patreon recently because I have enjoyed seeing the latest projects that you have completed. It is not a requirement from me that you have to consistently produce content because I am a member. I am a member because I feel you have a talent and you should be free to explore that talent without having to also have an additional job to pay the bills. However long it takes you to create, however big or small the creations are is fine with me.

I have been feeling the same lately. No motivation, very little inspiration and the strong urge to just lay on the grown and let nature reclaim me. It will get better though.
And I love all the things you make, whenever you make them. Don't care for regular posts, but care deeply for posts that you love.
take care

Also, I am learning to live with not being completely overbooked every single day, and this fear of not being doing something was not easy to overcome. As an entrepreneur I was never short of things to do. Now I need to seat back and relax when I can. Sounds like you may be addicted to being busy. Do you still meditate ?

For what it’s worth, pretty much everybody around me is feeling a bit (or quite a bit) down this January. The pandemics wore us down. Winter and short days is no fun. I mean, I own my business and it’s supposed to be fun, but I struggle to find reasons to get up in the morning.
And then I get up, take a shower, and from there it’s pretty good ! I am getting serious in watchmaking, I give massages, I read a lot, I cook… still. I want springs to get around. Quick.

The furniture looks great. Don't worry about having a down phase, you had a great time back in Sweden from the sounds of things and probably burned a bit too much serotonin ;). Give it a few weeks to build it back up (chocolate is a good source of tryptophans and magnesium allegedly!).

I've been going through the same thing with my work and channel (Venture City on Youtube) - I've just bought a 3d printer and have been setting it up. Excited to see if I can build models to use in my future sci-fi documentary video (something completely different than what I am doing now) - hoping it can live up to what I am expecting in my head

Embrace these feelings. Being busy can become an addiction and it sounds like you're there. Nothing wrong with reading, socializing, and reflecting. Inspiration will come and with it the drive to accomplish. Nothing more self defeating than thinking "I need to be inspired... now!".

Very relevant, heartwarming, feel-good movie recommendation that is spot on for this: Kiki's Delivery Service. Amazing, spunky young witch moves to a far away, exciting city to start a new life, and at some point loses her magic. It's the favorite movie of both of my daughters.

It's totally fine Simone. You are a very nice person and very capable. It's good to relax, and try not to worry. When you least expect it and idea will come. I had to laugh whilst watching, because you tell us that you haven't done anything and are in a rut, but then show us the amazing things you just refurbished and made. That is one beautiful and intricate builtin wall storage box/seat you made there, it is really hard to match that edge into the curves of the detailed skirting board and it looks really well made. Please don't discount what you have done... it is really good. And I'm fine with you doing less... that's healthy.. please don't pressure yourself.... you are an amazing human... glad to support you on Patreon.

Your new furniture looks great! I like the geomertic shapes in both the chairs and the bench cutouts. You have been up to something :)
I haven't been making much in the last few years since I took a desk job (gross! ), so I get the feeling! It is also so hard to transition back into a newer home after going "home" home, totally ok to feel sad. January sucks!
What about other types of Plamps? I feel like you were totally onto something that a lot of people our age are into (soft lighting and house plants).
Maybe a desk plamp? Lights make people happier so that is a plus!

It's totally OK that the idea machine is not cranking things out 24/7. Quality over quantity and all that.
I'm sort of in a similar rut. Work is neither fun nor interesting and I don't love it, but they do pay well and I haven't had to commute in nearly two years, and I DEARLY love that part.
But my hobbies are also kind of failing to inspire as well. Tough to break the east/sleep work cycle with fun.
That said, your videos (including this one) are usually a good kick in the pants and I've got the parts to start and complete a couple of projects. It looks like this weekend may be a shelter in place type of deal, so hopefully my neck cooperates and I can throw myself at it and wind up with a new spot to work and play from.
Anyway, stay safe, read a book and when your heart, mind, and body are in sync, the projects will reveal themselves and they will be awesome.

I'm already addicted to Discord, so I don't know if I can honestly say creating a new server is a good idea, because I will just end up spending more time on Discord then. 🙈 It's a big time-suck.

Quick idea pitch: a hackathon-like build with the community.
A general theme, a fixed deadline: something like 48 hours to come up with an idea, a design sketch, a build and a 30 second video submission of what has been built. You work in the same conditions as everyone else who's willing to participate, racing against the clock! You'd also get a fun and interesting video (a story with a set up, a conflict (the clooooock!) and a resolution - no matter what you'd get those as you progress with the brief) in 48h + time to edit.
But aaactually... it's winter and it's cooold in most of the world, so not many people are actually willing to go and do stuff (so I'm dismissing my buildathon idea). We just want something chill to watch while chilling. Personally I'm not into building stuff myself, there's just something so relaxing and entertaining watching other people work lol ok, I'd definitely like to watch you build against the clock, regardless of how many other people decide to participate, I dismiss my dismissal of a buildathon idea.
Regardless of what you do and what you don't, we still are your fans / faceless internet friends <3

Would it be easier to collaborate by incorporating "smarts" into something, so that you build the hardware (or whatever you like best) and you collaborate with someone online to build the hardware? For example, maybe you could build a door for scraps, and work with someone to use computer vision or RFID to ensure that it's really him.

I have not used Discord much but Iv herd it can be a great way to start and build a community and if joining a new Discord to help you feel more connected to people then I’m all in!
Quick idea for you, how about a motorised Lazy Susan and maybe call it a Super Lazy Susan? Also maybe make it with different speeds and highs and duel purposes it as a ball launcher for pets?

Hey . Fellow maker from Israel here, also on a bit of a slum, but trying hard to get out of it.
I would LOVE to collaborate with you, internationally.
Anecdotally i'm participating in the global game jam this weekend with another creator i've never met in person, she's in Canada. we're doing some VR experience.
Are you into VR ? have a headset? I'd love to show you some stuff and pick your brain about cool possibilities between making / hacking and VR.

This spoke to me. I believe there are more of us that struggle with feeling disconnected from or even missing a community to belong in. You've helped me to find joy in creating again. To value the process instead of the expected outcome. Now I surround myself with breadboards, paint, yarn and screws – and make things. This space – embodied of the spirit of shitty robots – is why it happened! The process, the learning, the humor, the joy, the very refined combination of "tramsig och seriös". Thanks for sharing! Var snäll mot dig själv. We'll hang around. <3

And that's what the Patreon is for, isn't it? Take your time, we are happy about ANYTHING that comes whenever you're ready!!! (and like you didn't do anything - but chairs and benches magically appeared out of nowhere?) And anything you do (read, watch, travel, hike, play with Scraps...) will somehow nurture you as a person and end up in your artistic/creative process, so just BE! Love from Germany!!!

I would love a Discord server, although my experience so far it's that I'm usually not very active in a group with all/mostly strangers. But maybe it's different in a more maker type community. Would be cool to see some stuff other people here made, and maybe share some stuff myself. Most importantly: do whatever helps you, we will all love it anyway!
Btw, those chairs look so cool, and the bench too!
Seriously don't worry about the quality of the projects. I'm obsessed with your puzzle table, but when I started following you, you made shitty robots. By far the biggest part of the value in your videos (and other posts) is YOU; your humor, your honesty, your shining personality. Not the stuff you make. That's just an amazing added bonus.
Don't go too hard on yourself, times will change again <3

What Brian said ("And a discord would be lovely, but you don't have to do it for us")!
If you start a Discord, make sure it doesn't consume too much of your time. Classic social media problem. As much as I would personally love that Discord to exist, don't use it as a persistent solution for a temporary issue. Start it only if you absolutely love the idea.

I felt so much of what you were saying after the holiday break and a month has passed I'm finally slowly dragging myself out of the unmotivated pond. I think the place you're in mentally is where a lot of people are right now. I know I've been getting less and less done around the house even with plenty of free time. Just missing that interaction with family and friends for two whole years at this point really starts to do a number n the mental aspect of motivation.

Being unmotivated and sad under the circumstances is completely understandable. You're allowed to take time to do nothing; do what you need to take care of you. When I'm feeling unproductive at work I usualy try to come up with a fun project around the house. Speaking of collaboration, Ive been wanting you to do one with Casey Neistat since you both ended up in LA. There must be something you could create using all of his broken gear. And its really cool to see that you ended up with painting Rainer Kaufmann painted based on the video of you making your table, and that you actually have it hanging over the table!

And even if we lived in normal times it's normal to have doubts and be unmotivated and you already know that. :) I'm currently lifting myself out of a hole I fell into a while ago. After several failures I now have a project for my master's thesis that I really love, it's somewhere between psychology, medicine and coding and I love these crossover topics so that's going to be great.
Thank you for sharing how you're doing. You're awesome. Keep your head up, or as we like to say in my hometown, keep your ears stiff. :)

You’re doing great! Those are great chairs and benches. I feel you on hitting a blah patch after a brief taste of what normal could be like. This is a tough January.
A discord wouldn’t be my choice, but if you’re struggling with ideas why not do another live brainstorm like the one that led to the match table? That could give you a hit of community and idea generation all at once.

It can be a tricky time of year and having had the excitement coming back to the relative quiet is difficult for many. I know I get the winter blues (to say the least of it). Hope you find your way through this soon. The benches look beautiful by the way.

I don't know if you saw the chat Kyle and Adam did a couple of weeks ago? Felt like some good creator real-talk about how to stay in touch with your own mojo.

Love you lots. It is worth noting how important community is. Basically I think you should call Adam and invite yourself over for dinner, across a long table if epidemiologically necessary.
Community food is good.
Hang in there, xx

Feeling much the same way about my job and each day's work, Simone. Thank you for validating what so many of us experience. Been through many droughts like this before. They are indeed just a part of life and of creativity and it's always okay to lean into them a little bit before opening yourself up to something new and exciting. Stay strong. We're so here for you!

Feeling unmotivated is totally fine and normal. Been there in good times and in bad times. Sometimes there are reasons and then there is just an overall feeling of "meh". But it will get better soon.
As for project ideas/community interaction: I was always a fan of your livestreams. I thought about the game that has lead to the coffe table out of matches.
Don't know if this process puts to much pressure on you, but remembering the rejected combinations, there is a lot of potential.

Totally get this feeling especially in the cold and dark times of the year, everything seems like it should be fine but somehow the motivation drags and the inspiration is challenged.. I am as many others here (as far as I can tell by some of the comments by fellow minds) looking forward to that next time of blue sky and sunshine and the renewed sparks of motivation and inspiration once we dug through the deeper end of the low 🔆 keep digging, the sunshine is right there waiting for us 💪❤️

I love all of your projects, not just the bangers, because everything you make is distinctly *you*. You have such a unique approach to how you conceptualize and execute your projects. That, in and of itself, is what makes you great. Please don't force yourself to build something if your heart isn't in it, you deserve better than that. Keep up the great work!
PS. Discord sounds like fun!

I find baking and building LEGO has helped a lot when I'm feeling down and unmotivated. Sometimes, it feels good to make/build things that don't require that much "imagination", but you still are accomplishing something.
Discord can quickly become overwhelming when there are so many people posting so much... I think it can be a nice way to get in touch with others, but also can reach the point where you can't keep up and then becomes less useful. (I belong to a lot of different Discord channels and no longer can stay current with them all).

A couple years ago, you had a brainstorming session on Patreon, out of which came Match Coffee Table (great vid, nearly 5 mm views last I checked). The reason I mention it is bcz there was another fantastic idea from that session: A Door Made of Forks.
I really want to see YOU make a door made of forks.
(I do in fact need to replace one of the person doors in my barn, but I would first like to see YOUR interpretation of a Door Made of Forks.)
Or maybe start a challenge, where makers build there own...Doors Made of Forks. Oh and I dont know what Discord is, but I am willing to try it.

I've learned a lot about the need for rest and time away in the last two years. Hold on to the knowledge that we think you're awesome, and keep doing a great job of what I've started calling "managing your psychology." We're all going through this, and it's important people talk about it honestly and constructively, like you just did. Keep on rocking in the free world.

Don’t forget you have us and that we can (and want to) help! If you would go with the discord-idea there could be channels for project ideas, build tips (not only meant for you, but for everyone there who needs help building things), and decision making thoughts. All these things could be done here as well I suppose (if Discord feels overwhelming), but I do like the idea of having a dedicated space for it. And building a community is not only you creating/providing content for us, but also for you to be able reach out and get something in return as well.🧑💻🌍👩💻

Echoing the sentiment of many others here. The pandemic is forcing us to live in ways our species just isn't evolved for. It's cold comfort, but you aren't alone in feeling the way you are.
A purely take-it-or-leave-it thought: one way to connect with us in your audience might be shorter bits of content like tools you find super useful or have just recently started using, materials you like working with (or not working with, and why,) etc. More insight into HOW you make, and not necessarily a larger feature of WHAT you made, if that makes sense? Anyway, unsolicited opinion from a stranger. I love your work and find it inspirational!
Per your question, a Discord would certainly be fun. I'd say only do it if it helps you as a creator and/or public-facing person further your objectives. Maybe that's harsh? But as a fan and longtime supporter, it strikes me as a business decision first and foremost. :)

Love the bench! And it honestly suck to come back here after spending time with family and friends back home. Guess the US don't really feel like home (yet?) for me - been here 5.5 years now. Nothing uplifting to say really lol sorry, hope you'll get to spend time doing what you enjoy with people you love and feel better soon. And if you need someone to talk to about being homesick, don't contact me or we'll depress each other out! 😄 (JK feel free to reach out but I'm sure your actual friends will do just fine) Take care! ✌🏻

Don't be hard on yourself, ruts are a normal part of the creative process, As You Well Know. Just vibe! You're the first person I ever supported on patreon, and I've never felt like you should be "doing more."
As for a discord; that's tricky. In my own experience, I've never enjoyed a patreon discord--they quickly become too massive to be fun, at least for me. They have thousands, sometimes TENS of thousands of members, and it's immediately Too Much to Keep Up With, having that many people means inevitably there will be personality clashes and people get mad, there's drama...idk. Obviously some people find value in them, or they wouldn't exist at all, but I've never stuck around in one that had more than a couple hundred users at most, with the active userbase being much smaller, and I can't imagine that that's an experience that's unique to me.

I always feel exactly this way between January and March. It's not even really "SAD" with me, it's mainly that I'm looking at where I want to be... and it's not where I am yet. Again.
Keep pushing yourself, and find a groove in CA. There are a lot of great people out there and you'll find your group soon enough. :)

Love the bench. The design on the side is awesome! I'm glad you are able to make stuff just for yourself and not everything has to be "for content".
I can't speak for all of your fans, followers and patrons, but part of the reason I love the videos you make is the energy, and the process. The end results are great, but I also think it's okay to not have every project be a banger.
The content you make isn't great because of what is being made. It's because you made it.

I definitely get that unmotivated feeling - doing a very fun job, but sure get hella unmotivated many days. Collaborations are definitely energizing, but harder these days like you mentioned. I think we've all been there, and I recognize that is one of the effects on the pandemic; the lack of collaboration or co-building without a bigger/planned purpose. Your notion about setting the bar too high really hits home for me as well, so i've just been optimizing the workspace, building jigs and buying tools. But that just means I am comitted to use them at some point, i guess?
Looking forward to whatever you create - it is always a pleasure!

We love you Simone! Honestly I adore your furniture and around the house projects.. that’s what I want to build. But in our house any Simone video is watched and rewatched. I would love to see what you would engineer for a convertible tiny house.. things that can be other things, overtly or covertly. That bench is stunning. And the puzzle table.

Sometimes, I find myself the least motivated when I have the most projects to work on. I find that it's best to start chipping away at some menial task, which then jogs my memory about something more interesting that I can do.
