Scraps' Big Trip

Hi Past Self!

Future Self here. I know you're super nervous about flying to Sweden with Scraps because she tends to bark - no, war cry - at random strangers. But you know what? You can cancel that near-panic attack you're going to have the day before the flight. Because as it turns out Scraps is, indeed, a very good girl.

POV: you haven't peed in 9 hours because you don't want to wake up your dog

Scraps and I spent two weeks in Sweden, and seeing my family and friends made me happy on such a primal level. You know that type of happy, contentedness (I'm surprised that's an actual word!) when you're like "wow this is what it means to be human." But it really felt like it was first and foremost Scraps' trip, and I was merely a furless chaperone for her experiences.

She saw snow for the first time! Found it to be quite cold and underwhelming. Don't fall for the the hype.

She spent reluctant time with the NUMBER ONE THREAT TO THE STATE OF THE WORLD: my mom's cat. After about a week of intense negotiations, she agreed to sniff the cat's butt and found it to be a surprisingly pleasant experience.

We ate food...

... and modeled for next season's Christmas tree catalogues....

... and worked on jigsaw puzzles and just moved very slowly in general.

We got back to LA last night, and was greeted by two skunks having very stinky (and surprisingly noisy!) sex in my front yard. I think it means good luck? Or maybe it's a curse. Either way: I'm so happy to be back home! I have zero builds planned for this year, so 2022 is truly a blank page ready for me to spill some coffee on. Do you have any projects planned?

Happy New Year everyone!
Simone

yes, that's the word - that is one extremely comfy looking abode.

Blitzar Whistle-Stop

My projects consist of sewing a button back on a shirt, building a media cabinet, and unpacking. Oh, and finishing my novel by March.

Lewis Lopez

There'll be two little projects, probably starting in late spring, which will likely consume a lot of my time for the next 18 years 😅 Apart from that it's mostly project leftovers from last year. Wonderful story, and even though snow is not as exciting (I agree with Scraps on that one) it looks like she liked it and you did a good job chaperoning her 😁

Severin Schols

You mean "Fernweh"? ;)

Severin Schols

WASGIJ puzzles are the best. Wife and I have them all and can't wait for the next one to come out.

Jens Krabbe

So glad you could get home for a visit! Also glad you are safely back home in the states. Sometimes our little ones surprise us when we least expect it. Thanks for sharing! Do fornicating skunks smell different? Just curious. Not sure why…

Drew Grove

Such of great pictures! (Thanks to Scraps to be so photogenic! jk) Welcome back Simone!

Mariano Cerrato

I have never been successful doing a jigsaw puzzle with a cat in the house. How is that possible?

Jeff

Yay trip with puppers! My tripawd dog and I would love to see another project involving Scraps.. Mia LOVES when Scraps is in your videos.. I adore all of your projects, for the projects themselves, and your attitude about them. I have a personal love of furniture builds... and Truckla!

JoyousWaters

Sounds like a very well deserved pause and disconnect from the everydays. Can’t wait to see what coffee spills you are doing this year ;) worked out pretty damn well so far I’d say…

Mate Navay

What's that German word for "feeling homesick for a place you’ve never been"? I'm feelin' it.

Blitzar Whistle-Stop

Have you ever thought about building a bed that kicks you out at sunrise?

Clay

The cat has the most swedish mug. Looking forward to your endless creativity in 2022. (I'm back in Europe for good after 7 years in SF. So adventues ahead for sure. But like your trip it still feels like I'm just on a holiday trip home as usual.)

Kathrin Leppek

HNY! Glad you had a great time reconnecting with your fam in Sweden!

JONATHAN WANG

SO happy you had a lovely time here in Sweden and got to catch up with your friends and family! <3 All the best for the upcoming year!

Ottar Kraemer

And a Happy New Year to you and your dear ones. So happy for you that it went so well with Scraps 🥰

Anne ROBERTZ

Happy New Year! Love the photos. Scraps looks so unimpressed, haha!

Dave Madison

Happy New Year to you, Simone! I wish you the best for the coming year, health and much joy. Glad you had a nice vacation and everything went well with Scraps. I plan to improve my skills in using graphics programs and develop more routine. I also want to try a certain style that is minimalist/geometric.

Edgar Ernst

You are a true inspiration Simone! Watching your videos and reading your posts always gets me thinking about starting a new project, still waiting for an idea to stick though. Happy to hear you had an awesome time in Sweden. Take care Simone and Scraps!!!

Kaiden Antilla

Contentedness is highly underrated, I’m so glad you got a good dose of it. Happy New Year!

MrJan

So glad you and Scraps had a great trip! My only project right now is becoming a manager at my job. Currently spending a month in Vegas for training. Just as nervous as I am excited but everybody has been so positive and supportive, it's been an overall great experience so far! Wishing you a very wonderful 2022!

Justin McMurry

I'm so glad the trip went well! And that the cat's bum was a pleasant surprise for Scraps.

Maria Lamle

That sounds so nice! Glad you got so some time away! I’m currently hyperfixating on Ultralights and Biofuel but I doubt I’ll build either of them lol

Daniel Delaney

Love the pics of Scraps! I'm finishing up a large belt 3D printer project :)

Chris Lane- Venturi 3D

Happy New Year, Simone!

Luis Torrefranca

Yay for the safe trip. I need to re-organize my shop after building Deer Cooler 2.0. It worked really well for aging meat and going to be a permanent 8x8 room in my shop. Also need to build my office, the unfinished basement is getting cold...

Chris Wilken

super glad you got to experience contentedness,, welcome back and happy new year,,i hope

TomT

So many projects... but the biggest is getting a pattern-making shop set up at work. For the complex stuff, we'll probably still contract out, but we need to be able to make test patterns and stuff in house and quick. I have as close to a blank check as I could wish for to buy tools and equipment. 4x8 CNC router table, here we come! (Note: Pattern-making as in foundry patterns for sand molds to cast metal in. I work in aluminum casting.) For personal stuff, it's getting my basement repaired and refinished after a drain backup, and making some bookcases. From there, who knows!

TwoRavens

Such a heartwarming and wonderful story, thank you!

Caleb Raymer

Right now (btwn flair-ups from a pulled muscle) I'm building a workbench for the barn (based on April Wilkerson's recent garage workbench). I have no current plans for livestock yet, but I definitely, desperately, need a dog. (Adopt, don't shop!) Lotsa property for me & the dog to roam.

Tree Carcass Mangler

So happy you had a happy and safe holiday and trip! It just started snowing here and I feel just like scraps, lol. My plans this year are for some new cosplay ideas and just to me more artsy fartsy in new ways and perfect some past stuff I've learned and loved! Wishing you all the best! :)

Allison Israel

Happy new year! I'm definitely in the "finishing unfinished projects" camp for this year.

Stephen Hager

You are LIVING MY DREAM! That is so damn exciting. What are you going to put in the barn?

Simone Giertz

Hang in there!!

Simone Giertz

Happy new year! The first project which comes to mind is a bedside table lamp my dad made for me. Its body is a chrome-plated spray gun, mounted atop an old oil canister. I love it a lot, but also it turns on and off with one of those standard twist lamp switches next to the bulb...and I really want it to turn on and off when I squeeze the spray gun grip. So far I've ordered a push button switch which I think I can squeeze into it, but the spray gun itself is sufficiently old that I'm having trouble figuring out how to route the wiring through it. I'll keep pondering :)

Danny Ben-David

Wanna come work on a Battlebot? or a Puppet robot (a puppet that I'm animtronically controlling)

Craig Danby

Looks like a great trip! Is that a torpedo in the background of the snow picture? About my only project of late is just trying to own less things by giving, selling, or trashing.

Jeff

Glad you had a wonderful vacation. Thanks for thinking of us. I have... too many unfinished projects.

Taylor Pridgen

Happy New Year to you and Scraps! Glad you got home to Sweden. I just bought a house with a garage/workshop plus a barn, so I have lots of projects planned. So many in fact, that I probably won't finish half of them. But then, that's the fun.

Tree Carcass Mangler

This was a really happy post and I'm so anxious about our how I'm going to get through teaching the rest of this nightmare school year that I am just BAWLING at the hope it's inspiring. I haven't set any resolutions because I don't really like them and surviving while being kind to kids has really been my only priority for a while. I *forgot* that I could plan for projects! I'm going to make a bug hotel! Thanks for the hope and the dog pictures!

Ginaelisa Cortez

Such cute pictures. Happy new year to Scraps and you!

Geerten

Great job Future Simone!

Carlos Forever.Endeavour

Very cute
