May Grab Bag of Mystery: Modeling Healthy Disagreement through STAR WARS

I respectfully disagree with your omission - The Acolyte. (Was that agreeably disagreeable? 😁) We were beginning to see something they've only slightly touched on, a humanized point of view of The Sith. No evil cackles with sinister grins, no ulterior motives, just the truth. Awww, but how did Qimir see the truth? It was going to be a complete immersion into their world - the causation, the culture, the reasoning. I'm so disappointed it's not going forward. As for Andor, I wholeheartedly agree. In fact, Andor is SO good, I think it's the best Star Wars installation, ahem, even better than the original trilogy. NOW somebody's gonna wanna come get me 😄

Finally someone who appreciates Solo and doesn't think Rogue One was the be all end all of SW movies. Thank you, Alan!!! (personally I dislike Rogue One a lot more, mostly because the romance plot feels entirely unearned, but that's just me)

So, something that gets overlooked a bunch about the "Goodbye... Darth" in Obi-Wan: He's not using it as a name. It's still a title, and Obi-Wan calls Vader 'Darth' there instead of Vader as more of the dismissal of him. He's letting go of the idea that this was Anakin, or even the angry, lost 'Vader' he fought on Mustafar. What's left... is just another Sith Lord. Could be anyone. Just 'Darth' whoever. And that, in turn, reframes the moment of 'Only a master of evil, Darth' in ANH into a 'you're still nothing special to me now' diss.

I would like more of this, perhaps with the Star Trek franchise 🙏❤️🙏❤️

I was expecting kind of a different conclusion to this—that you can agree on the finer (or even major) points but land in different places about what that means for the whole, as other parts of your values, personality, experience, etc interact with those opinions. I think you were both a little too harsh on yourselves there. But I enjoyed digging down into your personal opinions on something I also love (though I’m definitely more Team Alan in this subject 😬), and also the discussion about how to disagree productively!

I think some of the difference between how the Jedi were portrayed between the originals and the prequels can easily be explained, in story, as being romanticized, wanting the past to be more like how they pictured the Jedi Order should have been. (Of course when I resume watching, Jono captures this much more succinctly.) I would add, they even did not want to pass along the flaws of the past to Luke so he could have a fresh start. I did enjoy the movies, they are Star Wars after all. However, I agree with Alan, I can see what Lucas was trying to do, but it was executed poorly. When I introduced my daughter to the prequels (after the originals), I didn't have the heart to tell her that it was socially unacceptable to like Jar Jar Binks.

SPOILER ALERT: I wonder if the idea of Darth Vader being Luke's father came about because of David Prowse. On Netflix is (or was) "I Am Your Father," about how David Prowse was forced out and the backlash he suffered from being suspected of leaking the big reveal (he didn't). In it, they show an interview with the SW cast in which they asked opinions on where the next movie might go if there was a sequel. This was shortly after SW's meteoric rise, so Empire was still a few years away. He said it would be interesting if Vader and Luke were father and son, and the tension it would create since each could not kill the other because of their relationship. Prowse didn't remember saying it. Prowse was purposely kept out of the studio, with guards being posted, for the filming of Luke removing Vader's helmet. So, the director reshot that scene with Prowse. By that point, he had lost his West Country accent and sounded like Darth Vader.

I want this for all the major franchises even ones you agree on!

I had no idea there was SO MUCH star wars stuff out there! So many shows...

I completely agree with Alan, especially with "may the odds be ever in your favor :) Caveat, though, that I only managed to suffer through the prequels once or twice, and have only watched the first episode of any of the TV shows. (they always start the same way and I'm bored within five minutes) My sister loves them, though, and we just went to Galaxy's edge in florida which was epic.
