Character design

I wrote a little on twitter about the importance of character design for people who hire artists for their works but don't think it's important.

I would transcribe it here but i've used a lot of images so it's better to just go t the tweet. Maybe i'll make it into an article for my website

It's not so much that they don't *know* how the character looks than that they haven't given thought to it. Like, descriptions are usualy "it's a guy, short hair, wears a shirt" or "a woman with purple long hair", so i'm like; Ok i have nothing to go by as to how would i draw her face. Is not even that i don't have specifics like nose, jaw, etc, but that i don't even know what type of face i should do since i don't know her personality. Then i'm like, ok she has purple hair. Why? I mean, purple is a color that signifies someone timid, calm, does she have those traits, or the author just threw purple in because it looked anime? and if she has purple hair, then why her clothes are yellow? why not colors on the same palette range like blue, or a complementary like green? it's the yellow thrown there simply because the author didn't really care what she wears? There are lot of stuff that a writer seems to never think about, and that's fine, on principle character design is not their work. But then by logic they should acknowledge they don't know and hire someone to handle that.

Wow...As an author, character design is my favorite part of the process. Characters and setting are the first things I plan before the actual writing begins. How anyone could write a story and not personally know how their characters look is beyond me, especially because you should be able to describe you're character in the actual story.
