Quick Review: Wonder Woman

Sometimes I wish Tom King would think his metaphors all the way through before using them.  Because I spent way too much time deconstructing the Washington Monument scene.

I got Tom King'd out. I'll get around to his current work eventually.

Oh, Elektra: Assassin is a great example! And a bit challenging, too. I'm going to pull that out and see what I might be able to do. No guarantees, but it's an excellent suggestion, nonetheless.

Electra Assassin? It's prime Sienkienicz, but a mindfuck. For something lighter the current run of Birds of Prey is wonderful.

The same thing you describe happened to me with Danger Street. At first, trying to read it monthly, I thought it was pretty bad. But once it was done and I could read it all at once, my opinion was not as harsh.

Allan Hatt

My thoughts exactly. Tough times for a phallic symbol. Tough times, indeed.

I tried The Penguin too and it didn't keep me interested. So, I don't think it's you.

Cock blocking the Washington Monument. What a world.

Have to say I'm really enjoying this month to month and as you say like most Tom King things I suspect it will read even better when re-read when he's done. Not sure what he has planned for this title but I'd bet interested to see him do a stretch on Wonder Woman to see where he takes the series. The Penguin I'm enjoying a lot less as I'm really not sure what it going for aside from the surface stuff. May just be me?

Tom King sometimes loses aspects of his characters on the way to his metaphors.

I’ll probably follow your lead and read this run after it’s complete. Tom King’s writing can be very mixed for me where they’ll be some days where I’ll flip flop on whether or not a story of his ultimately worked or not. That being said, I always prefer Wonder Woman stories when they hark back to her Golden Age tradition of addressing social issues in the vein of her original creator, that being unashamedly blunt or unsubtle. Whether or not that message works or is conveyed well remains to be seen until King is done but I can appreciate the approach.

Anthony Cabrera

I'm pretty sure you're smart enough. Are there any specific comics you have in mind? After all, not everything is references and metaphors. I did do that for Mister Miracle and The Invisibles, so it's in my wheelhouse.

Allan Hatt

I've never understood Don Simpson, and I totally missed the cock blocking metaphor. I may not be smart enough to read anything after the bronze age. Any chance of writing annotated versions of modern comics?
