Making a Quick Color Gradient:
Before I start painting, I make a quick general color gradient curated for the area I’m about to paint. If it’s a green section, I mix a green gradient scale; if it’s yellowish, I make a yellow gradient and so on….If I don’t yet know what the color will be because I’m still discovering it, I create a general spectrum.
So here I am, with my palette, beginning with a generous pool of white and yellow, mixed abundantly so I can continually cut into it. With each subsequent pigment, I move down the scale, gradually shifting the mixture. As I go, I increase the chroma by introducing greens, especially earthier modifiers like raw umber and Van Dyke brown.
I have a Galkyd gel agent used for speed up drying.
