SO MANY VIDEOS! BTS #71

This past week, I've shot many videos. Let's run it back.

First, the video coming out tomorrow was my main concern, a collaboration with the youtuber Jazza. He has over 5 million subs, so this collaboration is a little bit like charity for my benefit! He's a super nice guy, and he challenged me to paint a 75mm display mini in 3 hours with ONLY an airbrush. This flies in the face of everything I know about painting display miniatures, so there was a serious mental hurdle to get over.

So obviously I painted this in what could be considered a lame way. I painted him nearly all 1 gradient but I didn't know what else to do. If I tried to mask things off, I would have wasted all my time doing that and would've been lucky to get all my basecoats on. I think what this video taught me is that I believe display models NEED to be painted in a certain way, when in reality, that's not true and you can interpret them however you want. The video was very much so about the journey, as opposed to the destination.

My wife actually helped me film this video a little bit, so I had to setup a camera rig for her to use (which is a very fun thing for me to do)

This is a GH5 in a halfcage with a handle, and a recorder + wireless LAV attached and I'm taking timecode out of the GH5 and into the mixpre3 on the bottom. I expect no one to understand what that means, but essentially when you hit record on the camera, the audio records too (on something much better than the internal camera) and the audio and video are identical in length so syncing is easy. I also turned on auto focus and auto exposure for her so all she had to do was point and shoot! Lastly, the lens and camera body both have image stabilization so all the shots were great, no stabilization needed. It turned out pretty good all things considered!

In preparation for this video, I decided to bust out some japanese magic juice. A LONG time ago, a patron sent me this stuff.

It's a coating for your airbrush that makes it more hydrophobic. So, I tested it on 2 airbrushes before the challenge with Jazza. I figured 3hrs of pure airbrushing would be a decent stress test. You clean your brush (or preferably use a new one), and apply the stuff in a thin coat, and then bake it on at 80C in the oven for 1hr. It definitely had an effect on the cup of my airbrush. Unfortunately, the needle still suffered from dry tip 2 times during the 3hr challenge but it's hard to say if that's better than expected because there's so many variables. The video will be about the chemistry of the product, but also it's effectiveness.

Jon came over and we shot 2 more videos. The first was a "blind touch test" of 40k minis to see if we could figure out which ones we were feeling. We decided to give ourselves a list of the minis we were going to be handed because we had no idea how hard this was going to be. It turned out to be too easy with that info. In the future if we do an Age of Sigmar edition, we'll not do that.

And finally, as you're all aware, Jon and I shot another episode of Drunk Mini Painting, and I'm happy to report that we did not puke!

In some other non video related news, I visited the doctor because my fingers are still numb from painting 38hrs in a row and he gave me a splint.

If it doesn't get better in 2 weeks wearing this at night, I should go to a hand specialist. I'm in no pain at all, it's just mildly annoying. Also, one of my favorite basing material brands, Gamer Grass, got in contact with me and sent me a goodie bag.

I'm going to be doing a sponsored video for them in the future where I make 4 cool scenic bases using some of their products. I've made a few of those videos in the past and they're always fun.

That's all for now. PAINT MORE MINIS!

I wasn't able to find anything :(

Thanks for your support! My hand is slowly getting better. Wearing a wrist brace at night as been working.

My daughter does a lot of computer art and suffers from carpal tunnel, so I was actually thinking about that while watching your marathon painting vid. Hope the hand gets better. BTW, yours is the first Patreon that I have supported.

Anyone know where to get that FUN!Coating -- besides Japan?

and I hope your hand get's better soon! <3

Wow! Really excited for all of these!

This really video really "highlights" my need to actually invest in a decent airbrush instead of struggling through with the cheap piece of crap that came with my compressor. Great content as always. Thanks Scott.

Dude that is so much material! Great job!

Excited for the Jazza colab. He's one of the best. Love the fact that he dove head first back into mini painting
