Early release!

I think the point of the video kind of got away from me. I emphasized more so that I'm trying to fix my relationship with my hobby, whereas what I'm actually discussing has value just beyond that. Let me know your thoughts.

I'm trying something new out. Typically in my videos, I am narrating beginning to end, nonstop. I'm showing what I'm doing and explaining it. Sometimes it's redundant so I should save some air and use music to break up the video. I'm not great at it yet, so I appreciate your feedback!

Thanks for that video, Scott, and sharing some of your inner thoughts while painting. You mentioned blending as the point in the process where the hobby feels like a grind. I bet we all have a different challenge where we second guess ourselves or may simply be too critical of ourselves. For me, a model with lots of skin can be a real demotivator and is a barrier I just need to push through. On one of your podcasts, I remember you and Jon discussing how we only have so many models in us to paint during our lives. That’s so true and it’s a thought that often pops into my head. Rather than being overly critical that something we’re doing isn’t perfect, maybe it’s better to think of that old advice and just keep moving forward. Despite all the research and practice, we all have those things we just can’t seem to get right. Perhaps it’s because we’re chasing after that elusive moment once before when we nailed it. Using critical thinking through experiments like the one you shared in this video, I walked away with a different conclusion than what you shared. I learned that if you take the time to think about a problem creatively and work at that challenge long enough, you’ll find a solution. Maybe in this case it was more of a realization than a solution and instead it speaks to trying a new tactic. Heck, I was so happy for you when your second test part was so much faster than the first. I thought, wow - he did it! I was a little sad you didn’t feel the same. I am not a creamy blender and never will be. But that’s ok! I love watching folks like you who do it so well. It’s inspiring. Sharing in the online community that you’ve created with your channel has really made the hobby more fun for me. If those blends feel like a monkey on your back, know there are folks like me who are cheering you on at home and are amazed at the results. It’s a fun journey to take with you each week.

20% of the video was a montage that I don't really feel was value add based on the information presented before that point. I had a hard time following what the message was.

I like that idea a lot, injecting newness. I might have to try that out!

I agree with Jordan re: story (something I never really thought about until I watched Scott’s video on paint schemes). I did that with our quarterly terrain challenge, and it really changed the dynamic between me and the work. Separately, I feel like I’m in a similar situation as Scott when it comes to DMing in my local group. I find the grind of planning becoming more and more burdensome and less fun than it used to be. So when I compare my two hobbies: miniatures and D&D, what’s the difference? For me, I think it’s novelty. There is so much to learn and absorb in mini painting, but DMing feels stale. How do I inject that sense of newness? Maybe it’s like any relationship. You have to keep it fresh. Thanks for the video, Scott. I look forward to more on this subject.

Good tip!

For myself, I can agree with the fact that sometimes painting, as fun as it may be, is not always fun. I believe this to be the case because we see the aspect of that painting process to be more work than fun. Lets be honest, no one likes work. For me, having a goal makes the process more enjoyable, but what has helped me the most enjoy all of painting, even the not so fun factory work feeling process parts is I have spent more time developing a character, or back story into what I am building, painting, and trying to achieve. So when I apply the paint and finish a model, I brought to life something I have created at a deeper level. For example, in Warhammer AOS I am creating my own Slaves to Darkness warband with my own Chaos lord, inspired by Fenrir of Norse myth, and all aspects of his and his warbands history will be not only backed by Warhammer fantasy lore, but also lore of said mythology.
