Next Musical!

Ok, So I've had a TON of suggestions for the next musical to React to, and Now I need your help deciding!

Comments

My Pics for Contemporary would be "Heathers", "Six" and "Beetlejuice", sadly non of that have an available stage pay version, so you would probably have to listen to the OST or find Animatics For slightly more classic Musicals I would go with "Sweeny Todd" and "Into the woods". The lattr has a full stgplay up on YT, for Sweeny Todd you coud look up one of the Anniversary Concertts (Don't use the Movie, you'll miss half the numbers. As Musical Adaptations go it isn't bad, but it doesn't hold a candle to the actual Musical)

Saiyasha

There are soooo many good ones! I suggest not doing the heights since lin write that too and some of the same cast. Les mis is a personal favorite, but it is older and heavy. Phantom is a classic- and I dislike Oklahoma lol. But. Others I've seen mentioned, Chicago, rent, Sweeny are all good. Or you can always go comedy like the book of Morman (south park guys wrote it) or something rotten. Enjoyed watching you experience this though!

Christy A

I’ll second Hedwig and the Angry Inch! It’s been my favourite for… 20 years? Just wonderful. (… and if you want a good giggle, “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog” is fantastic haha)

Leah

I second that 💯

Eva

I vote Chicago (2001) or Tick Tick Boom (2021)!!! 😁 they are super different from Hamilton in every way except that they are also just awesome! Chicago is an Oscar winning classic with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger and Tick Tick Boom was a recent surprise hit with the amazing Andrew Garfield.

Eva

Oh, I'm not saying it bothers me in the least or that I'm worried it will take up too much space - I meant it was a - "your space, so you do you" comment in case you had complaints. I'm sure lots of people missed out on the glories of musicals growing up. LOL I make one big distinction between types of musicals, though. There are the ones with songs, and then there are the ones where the script is sung. Unless it's an opera in a foreign language, singing lines in English that aren't formatted like song lyrics sounds annoying to me. That's what I meant by musical theater not being my favorite thing. It's almost 1, I've had tea and a cherry Danish, and am *almost* out of bed, so doing pretty well, thx! 😜 It's also sunny in Seattle at the moment for the first time in 4 days. Woot! Hope you're well!

FlyUshkiFly

ohhhhh I'll have to put this on the list! what all Idols have been on it!?

John Reaves

Hey I totally get it! I don’t plan on flooding this patreon with musical reactions it’s just something that came up on our live streams that I had never seen any and I told them I would do a few :) honestly I do enjoy what I’ve seen so far though! ( only Hamilton 😂) BUT! I promise moving forward with these, I will keep them in their own area, (Musical Reactions tag) and not to flood the patreon with them. Planning 1-2 a month.

John Reaves

Korea (or at least Seoul) is fascinated by Hedwig and the Angry Inch. It has been continuously running for over a decade with both a standing cast and mainstream drama, or even idol, guest stars. Recommended. It's more like a rock concert with soliloquies. I guess even Neil Patrick Harris has a version.

FlyUshkiFly

lol is it wild that I NEVER watched a musical til Hamilton? Like I knew about the sound of music, but always ran off and played when I was a kid and it came on. I'm for sure not going to flood patreon with musical reactions but I'll probably react to one or two a month just because I'm interested in see what's out there, but I'll try to keep it very organized so its hopefully not too intrusive to those who don't want to watch. Hope you're doing great today Fly!!!!

John Reaves

Yeah, I've realized over the years I really don't care for musical theatre. I grew up watching classic musicals like Sound of Music, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, My Fair Lady, and all the Disney animations. I still love those, but somehow don't like the stage dramatics of Broadway musicals. Don't care, though, because you have tons of other content for BTS, and that's why I'm here. 😁

FlyUshkiFly

Ok, I’m not a fan of these. I appreciate having diverse music interests - I have a wide range of tastes. But I would rather subscribe to a channel that says that’s their focus rather than a random mix of unexpected stuff. Maybe you need more than one channel? Just MHO.

Nature Girl

By the way, thank you for the Hamilton reactions! I can’t wait to see which ever one you pick

Teri Kinney-Bishop

In the Heights is fantastic and you should definitely watch it, but despite how many votes it's getting, I wouldn't make it your second musical, just because it's also by Lin-Manuel Miranda. You should watch a few different styles and composers before ITH. I'd recommend Les Mis, because while the music is a super different style, I think it has a lot of the same things you liked about Hamilton: a big cast of characters, deep emotion, musical and lyrical complexity (including constantly reusing themes), and a story that spans a man's whole life.

Sounds Like Drumming

Sweeney Todd? 😅

Ara

Tick tick boom!

Danielle Cristiano

The movie adaptation of RENT

Chriss The FloorStuffie

Should be this right here! https://www.patreon.com/posts/hamilton-part-2-75787454 Hope you're having a great day! Side note, what's your favorite musical! I really want to watch another soon I just am at a lost for where to start! there's so many good ones from what im told!

John Reaves

Where is the Hamilton reaction? I can’t find it.

Cassi Perry

In the heights or Chicago

Teri Kinney-Bishop

Galavant!

mahjacat

I’m a massive come from away fan. HadesTown is also fantastic

Cat

HadesTown or Rent

M S Moses

That's true, I thought it made more sense in the movie too. I would also recommend Next to Normal. It's sort of a rock musical

Joyelizabeth

Rent or Chicago!

Mel McCahill

Definitely both!

FaythSky

Jesus Christ Superstar, Chicago, or Newsies are my suggestions!

Heather Rivet

OHHHH!!! I need to check both of those for sure!

John Reaves

Yeah,Starship is a really good one too,one of my favorites. And yeah when you get the chance Firebringer is a really good one.

Kyleigh

Rent or into the woods

Nora Frisch

Newsies is a great choice! As is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers!!!!

TSO 아포방포

The problem is I don't think you'll enjoy Les Mis, it's basically an opera. Again, I'd recommend Heathers as a good segue into the more typical/popular musicals

Erin

Chicago - 2002 film with Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta Jones, Richard Gere and Queen Latifa. This musical is often liked by non-musical fans. In the film, it’s moved off the stage, into the world. Sort of. Good film. Not nearly as emotional as Hamilton. Fun satire from the 1970’s that is still resonates today.

Ms. Chuck Terry

Agreed - I'd ease yourself in with more modern musicals before going to classics like Phantom or Les Mis

Kylee Breanne

Starkid for sure! They are fantastic!!!! My personal favorites would be Holy Musical B@tman! or Starship Ranger (or just Starship? I can't remember exactly) I have been dying to watch Firebringer as well, just haven't gotten to it yet - but I've heard good things about it.

Kylee Breanne

Les Mis is so beautiful - I think taking a step away from Lin Manual Miranda and seeing a different musical style will be nice. It's so good - ahh now I'm going to have to re-watch

Taylor B. Tyler

jesus christ superstar

Julian Yates

In the Heights is musically much like Hamilton (both being Lin Manuel Miranda) I’d personally suggest something different to get a taste for the range of musicals. Les Mis or Phantom are equal for me.

Maria Chavez

I would say best to go with the movie, in the stage version I Dreamed A Dream is much earlier in the show, I feel like it makes more sense where they placed it in the movie

Liam Mcfarlane

In the heights is another Lin Manuel musical so that feels like a natural next step. Les Mis and Phantom are old-school musical theatre musicals where there’s A LOT of singing so I feel like you have to work your way up to those, ease your way in with the modern stuff 😂

Liam Mcfarlane

It be cool if you would watch Starkid musicals,my favorite being Trail To Oregon, but more mainstream ones that I like are Six The Musical,Beetlejuice The Musical, and Dear Evan Hansen.

Kyleigh

i'm a phantom girl all the way. saw it on broadway and everything. but goodness i have to go with les mis for this one. if you're new to musicals i think it's one that will definitely pull you in! also maybe check out sound of music at some point with julie andrews and christopher plummer. that's one that i've heard so many people find musicals through

emily ღ

Chicago. I really think you would like it. Also, maybe Wicked?

Jane Ramirez

Newsies!!! I watch this twice a week i can never get enough!!

Nikkibos

In The Heights or Dear Evan Hansen :)

Sara Vuolteenaho

A few suggestions - Jesus Christ SuperStar (technically a rock opera), Tommy (written by The Who) School of Rock (if you can find a copy), Chicago or Cabaret.

Lisa Hagar

Les Mis!!

Anthonia is procrastinating

The Greatest Showman

Ija Ochoa

Repo?

Erin Rae

If you do Les Miserables please do the movie with Hugh Hackman. And if you do the Phantom of the opera please do the royal Albert hall version the movie is so bad

Ana

If you do Les Mis, please do the stage version or the movie. I know the movie does not have the best vocals from some people (although there are several Broadway singers in it) but you will at least understand the context. In the anniversary performances, it's harder to understand what's going on because it's in a concert form and the singers arent really acting it out. I'd recommend the anniversaries for someone who has seen the play and knows the story.

Joyelizabeth

The Greatest Showman, Dear Evan Hansen, the new West Side Story, a bootleg recording of Great Comet, and #1 is an original cast bootleg of Book of Mormon. The last one is a no-brainer. If it's not on YouTube, I may have it.

Donkey Lips

Did you "meh" Hugh Jackman? He was great. And let's face it, if not for Russell Crowe, everyone else was plenty good enough for it.

Donkey Lips

Starlight Express In case you don't know it.... It all takes place on roller skates because the characters are depicted as different kinds of trains and carriages. It's about finding and believing in your true self. A true London West End classic through many years. But from the listed suggestions I'd go with Les Mis. 👍 💜

Imajin All The Purple

I'd take either Les Mis or In the Heights, but only if it's not the movie version of Les Mis. Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne and Samantha Barks did amazing, but the rest...meh. Since you can't find a stage version, my suggestion would be the 10th anniversary Dream Cast concert. It's not the full musical with stage gubbins, but as the name suggests, it has the BEST singers of all the casts that had played up til that point.

Scribbles

Hadestown :)

Amberley Heins

If you end up watching les mis, I would recommend watching the anniversary concert over the movie. The movie chose to hire celebrities over people who were trained musical theater actors but also chose to record all the singing live so some of the singing can be distracting because of it. But, even so the story and music in les mis is so good that the movie is still ok if thats what you do choose to watch.

Da Coookie

Les Miserables 🥺
