Fashion & Characters - PSD File + 4h Process Video

Hey, guys! 

Today, I'm sharing with you the process behind these two beauties. Some days, it's hard to create, but other days, things tend to be less difficult. I saw a video of two pigeons weeks ago and found it interesting. However, I didn't do anything at that time as I couldn't think of any particular way to represent that moment through characters. But one morning, while having a conversation, the "enemies to lovers" topic was brought to the table. I then thought it would be interesting to depict two adolescents from different lifestyles sharing a pleasant moment.

To emphasize the "lifestyle" idea, I chose the popular sports boy and the gothic girl as contrasts; they might not be enemies, but they're certainly visually different. While drawing, another idea popped into my mind: what if they were actually angel and devil? There's no need to add any supernatural VFX, but a small costume indication of this concept seemed fitting - yet another fashion element to the development. If it wasn't clear, I thought it would be funny to add versions of themselves trying to split them - a whole movie in my head!

A good day looks like this: I start with a simple idea, and throughout the process, new, peculiar situations pop into my mind. I like to have at least three points of interest in these illustrations, so even if you miss something, there are other things going on that add new layers to the narrative. But it always starts from a simple idea, usually something I found on social media, where I've been spending most of my time lately.

I didn't want to take a risk in terms of costume because I feel I've been focusing so much on "momentum" pieces lately and not on fashion, leaving me a bit rusty. I created a fashion board and pinned as many interesting clothing items as I could find. It's not as simple as it seems. I often need to have some fashion sense to mix different pieces of clothing to push the concept shape as much as I can. This is necessary to bring something new to the table. So, here's the board; it's a secret board, but I'll be pinning the costume designs I'll be using for characters:

Fashion is a big part of my brand as an artist. If it's character design you want to do, I consider it important to have a sense of dressing and some education in the subject. You may not need to be a fashion designer, but understanding where these trends originate and what kind of character would dress in a particular way will add layers of credibility to anything you want to bring to life.
