We need to widen the gap between KaguyaSama: Love is War and Fire Force. For arguments sake, KaguyaSama is only 41 episodes with hilarious comedy and some tear jerking moments while Fire Force is 48 episodes with a possible season 3 coming out this year as well, so if you’re gonna vote for one of the two, vote KaguyaSama. Edit: So I did watch some episodes of Fire Force for myself, and the story’s good, I like the characters, and the animation is pretty sick. However, the fan service does come out of left field at times. I definitely prefer KaguyaSama to be the fifth spot, but I wouldn’t be too disappointed if this show got it instead.

I feel like you and everyone else on the planet knew what the guy meant when he said "shounen" Solo leveling fits that vibe very well, it's simplistic and made for young male audiences. The protag is a young guy whos handsome, cool, has special plot device powers and women fawning over him wherever he goes. The story itself exists to show off how cool the protag is, more so than almost any other story I've read/watched, and it really is pure slop aside from the high production value

Well if you look at it in a literal sense it’s not really “nit-picky”, many of these have manga that were released in shonen magazines so as the magazine have a targeted demographic they fall into Shonen. However just because they are targeted for that demographic does not mean only that demographic will be resonate with it, for example Frieren is shonen, it is published in Weekly Shonen Sunday a magazine that is targeted for the Shonen demographic however it has many female and adult fans who would not fall into the “adolescent boys” demographic. Spy X Family is published in Shonen Jump so again is a series targeted at the shonen demographic making it a shonen series. So there no real need to broaden the definition, if a series is targeted for a particular demographic, in this case adolescent boys, then it is shonen however as you can see in this list alone not all shonen are, to use a western term, “Battle Shonen” and can have a variety of different genres

Somewhat nit-picky to put them all in the same camp. Shonen may be a demographic but it does generally have a structure that's been formulated over the years. While some may not fully qualify in this list you could make arguments for say frieren as stark and fern definitely follow the shonen formula but Modoka is mahou shojou (albeit a deconstruction) which is not classified as a shonen even if it follows similar scaling structures. If you broaden the definition nearly every show can be called a shonen but I think that's a little unfair to say. Spy x family is slice of life/kaguya is romance/blue lock is sports (Sports is a weird genre which usually always follow similar shonen beats like haikyuu or kuroko etc)

The trick is not to think of it as a season 2. Gemini is what boruto is to naruto or Eureka seven AO is to the original series. There's a bunch of really amazing anime that change up their main cast in season 2 and I find it better to compartmentalize them as a reboot to not tarnish the first seasons awsomeness.
