And he was the captain of the 9th division. So 6 9. His squad's jackets read the full form "Muguruma 9th squad". Kubo is definitely playing around a little here as you can read 6 (mu) 9 (ku) as muku, i.e. innocence/purity/liberation (from desire) from Sanskrit and Buddhism. The jackets of squad 9 are also evidently in a japanese 'biker gang' style, though it was more associated with cars, like the second part of his last name (guruma = car). I doubt any of this is a coincidence. He probably chose the last name for these word plays.
