surj touched on it but didnt follow through. not EVERYONE has the fortitude TO be tough, so there is nothing anyone can do to change that. there are fragile beings that you beat and make stronger but there are also fragile beings that you can beat and break hence suicide and school shooters. you gotta teach/reach each person where they are at, not at your level. thats why therapists say "you cant raise all your kids the same because they are not the same. know your kid and handle them accordingly". some kids need whoppings, some need groundings, others need hugs. i would have handled the hawk situation differently "f what anyone has to say about the way you look. f em up if they ever run their mouth about your lip" BUT then we wouldnt get this character. every action creates a butterfly effect to give us the bomb show we all love, including johnny's insensitivity

I said perfect example in the context of ignorance, not that they both have equivalent historical weight. The core emphasis is that ignorance doesn't really excuse the behavior.
And frankly the last sentence in your second paragraph comes across more as black exceptionalism than anything (and undermine the word? as if black artists constantly throwing around the word without any historical context isn't undermining the weight of it? it's literally how an entire generation of people learned it, through casual context, but ok). No offense intended. The n word is the worst slur, it doesn't mean other slurs or other acts of casual racism is okay, so it shouldn't matter what the historical weight is. The fact is *it's not okay now*. That's the point of comparison that actually matters and what my emphasis was centered on when using the n word as an example. Do I need to cite the degree of brutality of the Rape of Nanking anytime somebody brings up atrocities that don't have the same exact degree of brutality? Of course not because it's silly exceptionalism. Atrocities are atrocities.
Let me also put this entire thing to rest. The Karate Kid franchise ITSELF is aware of this trope. There's a reason the only three times people made these exaggerate karate sounds are Terry Silver in the third film, clearly in a mocking manner, and Daniel's car dealership competitor in the 4th episode of the first season of Cobra Kai. Miyagi does it once as a return mocking to Terry Silver after beating him in a fight, but never does it otherwise. You also notice how Daniel, even Johnny, or any major character never do those sounds? Anyone actually trying to push back on my stance here are out of touch. Not necessarily directed at you, but the franchise itself is cognizant of the issue. That says it all.

It's not a perfect example. The N word has centuries of hate behind it and was used in conjunction with other horrible things to oppress people. There are many of your generation that might be ignorant of it but there are many in your generation who knew of its origin from an early childhood and know it's not a music thing. Depending on where you grew up and went to school, your experience may not be the norm.
I get your point but the analogy you're using isn't a good one and it really never is when talking about these issues. A lot of times it comes off as cringe when people try to make a point of comparison or analogy around the word which ultimately undermines the severity of the word and its vile history.

It’s not exactly the same but it’s pretty adjacent. The n word is a perfect example because many people in my generation literally first heard the n word in a non negative context because of all popular hip pop songs was when i was in middle school. Everybody said it. It wasn’t until i was older (well not by much, high school exactly) that i learned you’re not supposed to say it regardless of intent. These are n words said by black people as casually as saying “sup dude”. Literally it was “sup n-word”. It’s obviously not okay even with that origin for many people.
The point is, w/e beign origin (and bruce lee himself had some issues with the media presentation as well) it may have had, it’s definitely evolved into something that was mainly negative. Again, i added the caveat that it was part of my youth and maybe the current generation is different but considering how much more PC the newer generation is, i highly doubt it.
I literally wouldn’t have an issue with this at all (I don’t complain about south park doing stuff like this, they make fun of everyone) but the normies present themselves as PC and cringe everytime michael scott from the office breaths. It’s just hypocrisy and a double-standard i noticed not going away after 6 episodes lol. I didn’t care enough to bring it up the first few times but it looks like it’s not going away.

It’s really interesting JJ that your first response when someone says
“Don’t be shitty if you disagree with others”
Is to say that person is a cuck simp
That’s literally what the show Cobra Kai is about, learning to talk to and value others and to not be an asshole unless its necessary

I can't tell you how to feel about something that's impacted you personally and I see the point you're trying to make with Bruce Lee but it's not the same thing as rap stars using the "n word".... at all. Bruce Lee popularized those sounds, became stereotypical in the 70's and 80's with lots of exploitation films, and evolved to not being portrayed positively in media at some point (I don't know when that happened) whereas a culture is owning the word from people who originally created the word hundreds of years ago to distinguish slave from commoner (extreme oversimplification). In 2023, depending on how the "n word" is said, it's a lyric to a song or a red flag for people to stay away from an area.
The negative connotations to the sounds you bring up have evolved to the point where younger people might be ignorant that it could be hurtful to some.

Btw fuck the people saying shitty comments to you guys, especially Navi and Rana. If they’re so sensitive that they act shitty when gender is discussed then that just shows they’re insecure and need to look inward 👀
Johnny would hate y’all’s whiny asses
(I know comments are often shifty and judgmental but the ones last week were especially shitty and misogynistic in tone)

You guys are totally spot on about how the show depicts Johnny’s teaching as messy and inappropriate
Suraj and Navi on top of these themes! Can’t wait for Scucession tomorrow!
That’s the same reason I think kids and teens like it so much, it addresses things from their perspective (maybe sometimes in a shallow or black and white way but it’s still often fun with fights every other episode)
Would be more upset if Johnny was portrayed as in the right

What I like about Annette is that her magic comes from her religion, showing us that it's not just the Abrahamic religions that hold power. Any mass form of worship gives power in the Castlevania universe, so in that regard, every religion is valid. Because this series has only really taken place in europe/middle east, there hasn't been a lot of chances to showcase other religions and how they deal with vampires. I'd be curious what other religious powers can be bestowed upon people. Like, if you're a Budhist, can you enter into a Nirvana state to fight vampires? Or if you were a Hindu, could you summon an aspect of Shiva? The more you think about it, you can see the writers potentially opening the door to future opportunities.

Johnny was bullying other people around school as well, it sounded like he had been harassing Ali for weeks to get back together with him and destroyed her radio for no reason. Let's not try and sugarcoat Johnny's actions because you like him now he was a menace.

If you say the n word the way rap stars do it then it’s okay? They dont use it maliciously. And yes bruce lee did it. He’s also chinese. And yes it didn’t start out as a mocking thing but it definitely became one. Again, at least when i was a kid/teen.

She was confined in Castle Csejte however the veracity of the evidence that lead to her confinement were quite suspect as its surrounded by exaggerations and 2nd hand claims. Before the accusations, little to no complaints were given towards Elizabeth either from the lower nobles or commoners from the area. Thurzo, the main instigator of the rumors and the investigation towards Elizabeth was after her fortunes and even once attempted her hand in marriage but was rejected.
The four servants that were convicted, three were executed. The testimony that they have given were all under the duress of torture. The fourth servant was only given a life sentence since she testified being bullied by the castle servants. These servants were all tortured and interrogated by Thurzo.
After her confinement, Thurzo gained the fortunes of Elizabeth

I'm trying to remember: didn't those sounds basically originate with Bruce Lee, and that's why they became part of the public consciousness? I'm probably wrong, but I feel like I recall reading that's basically what popularized that stuff. And then, obviously, it turned into a cliche and a stereotype because, y'know... that's what always seems to happen with pop culture.

When you do it like Silver did in the third movie, then yes, you're doing it in a mocking way. If you are actually doing karate, then you should use kiai (just make sure you're doing it right and not making stuff up).

#Sundayrundown #Cobrakai It's interesting to compare Johnny as a bully to Kyler. Johnny and Daniel got into it over Ali, we never see him even call anyone else a name. They jump Daniel after several encounters (the last one Daniel initiates). Kyler and friends are jumping Miguel cause they couldn't get beer. I can say Cobra Kai bullied Daniel, but Kyler is dishing it to everyone including girls he tried to date...and he can't really fight, they just jump people. Meanwhile, I think Aisha is probably getting the worst bullying of all.

Erzebeth Bathory OR Elizabeth Bathory was a hungarian noble who was rumored to be a serial killer and was probably the inspiration of another prominent vampire in fiction and a character in castlevania, Carmilla, as they both share the title of "Blood Countess".
Elizabeth got her nickname due to the rumor that she has killed and tortured hundreds of girls which is why you see so many girls in her dungeon in this episode. According to legend, she killed maidens as its believed that bathing in their blood leads to eternal youth.

Are these guys PC or not 🤣. They are on other stuff but then those sounds on every episode.
Those karate sounds in the beginning are literally what white people use to mock east asians when i was a kid. And even in the third film it was used by terry silver. Maybe times are different now though.
