That makes Michael’s stance more justified in principle if not in action and how he handled it. You can’t force someone to go into rehab because they discovered long ago change can never happen unless the person themselves want to change. This episode was hilarious and the next episode is great as well. Still looking forward to the back half of season 5 but these single drops means it’s gonna be a minute. Maybe double drops can come back in the near future?

2023-08-22 19:18:16 +0000 UTC"Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when America takes a brief moment to pretend it truly cares about integration nonviolence and racial harmony" - Huey Freeman in The Boondocks comic-strip I think this is the episode of Season 1 I rewatched the most when it first came out, I was young but I knew it was special, it took me a few years to truly appreciate how good it really was though. What Aaron McGruder does so well using a "What If" scenario is that when his MLK wakes up from his coma and finds out that his legacy, his entire life work has been reduced to three words “I have a dream”, he is then invited on talk shows and news stations with the hosts expecting him to be the whitewashed, almost sanctified version of Martin Luther King Jr we have been taught and so it's brilliant to show how horrified they would be by the anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, ardent critic of America’s over-militarism he actually was. Those scenes are my favorites in this episode, and of course I loved Huey throwing the chair at that man and then pummeling him for disrespecting Dr King. Although it seems that when remembering this episode people mostly remember that speech near the end of the episode, and to be honest I personally feel like that speech leaned a bit too much into respectability politics, but the author has a tendency to do that. Last thing, a few years ago there was a hashtag on social media #MLKAlsoSaid which brought some of his less famous quotes and speeches to the general public. He was such a compassionate, brilliant and eloquent orator it's a shame he is reduced to one speech when he had so many incredible ones. A lesser known quote of his I really like is “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health care is the most shocking and inhumane.”
