Like Thin Blue Line, which looks really light on the surface, but the first episode ends with the wholesome "life is worth living" moment being slapped down by revealing that the desperate man we'd been following all episode had killed himself immediately after we'd cut away from the wholesome moment. It presents itself as twee and wholesome, while doing some really surprisingly cutting, dark comedy. It's not really underrated, because it's still really popular decades later, but it is underestimated.

2025-01-13 03:53:02 +0000 UTCOne of my favourite shows easily, as with most shows the earliest episodes aren’t the strongest, you’ve got to give it a little time to get to know all the characters really, like the best shows this also gets better and better as it goes. I do think some people judge it by the first few episodes and drop off too soon. It’s a shame because it really is fantastic with some truly memorable characters. It’s not afraid to be vulgar at times or use bad language, which i love, especially as most of the characters are pensioners.

2025-01-11 22:15:14 +0000 UTCIt's not that it's difficult having them on different days mate. It's the fact that on a poll day we have to wait a week until the first episode of the show. Which is fine in theory but when we have 4 new shows in one week it means you're getting 2 shows that week instead of 6. If we lump the polls together we could get it over with in one day and not miss out on nearly a week's work of content

Roy Clarke basically wrote sitcoms that on the surface seemed safe and gentle and quite twee because of the settings, but Keeping Up Appearances is much sharper than it initially seems and actually quite dark in places, full of infidelity and abusive relationships and characters in the throes of existential crises; it was explicitly stated in several episodes that one of her sisters was suicidal, her father clearly has quite severe dementia, etc. It's not an especially comfortable watch, it's actually really bleak a lot of the time. See also Last Of The Summer Wine (although I don't really rate that) or Open All Hours, which are both quite melancholy and tragic depictions of a world gone by.

2025-01-11 16:32:34 +0000 UTCDo you all really think that Josh would prefer Keeping Up Appearances over a lot of alternatives such as Coupling, The Detectives, Plebs, Him and Her? Something a bit more modern, relatable and fun. Don’t get me wrong KUA is by no means a bad show but it’s still the kind of safe show your nan watches, it’s all just very tame. It’s almost on a level with Last Of The Summer Wine, certainly not one that comes to mind when recommending to an American as one of our very best. I honestly don’t know anyone under 60 who watches or has ever mentioned liking it. I really don’t mean to come across a jerk about it, people who voted for it and win is totally fair enough. It’s more of a question is it going to be to Josh’s taste is why I’m asking, i’d just be surprised if it is. I hope so otherwise he’s in for a few boring months of reacting to it.

Not knocking them, a poll is a poll, but would like to see more contemporary stuff here (at least from this millenium). On one hand I think its great that these old sitcoms are being kept alive this way, but personally I have no interest. I cant imagine they help grow this community either in the same way a Ted Lasso might.
