People have probably said this already but as this is a musical episode I think it's only right to say it again. Michael Crawford was actually the original Phantom of the Opera on both the West End and London stages.

And of course we all remember this scene too... https://youtu.be/Ud-eiDxeJj4

Yes, that is hilarious- although once the older guy saw the song he was going to sing, the penny dropped. They probably thought he was insane 😂😂😂😂

Haha, re: the way that Frank said "... I'm a man" - Do you remember the Only Fools episode when Del and the gang try to buy a case of gold chains off a con-man? During that episode Rodney is in the flat waiting for Cassandra to call him. And after a while he says to the phone "Well I'm not calling you first! .... I'm a man!" XD That is a reference to Some Mother's do Have Um! XD Great reaction!!

Interestingly, despite the punchline in this episode being his terrible vocal performance, Michael Crawford is a classically trained opera singer.

Charlie

It's hilarious how those 2 keep treating him like he's an artistic genius that just needs some guidance to realise his full potential

Yes. I took a few Latin language lessons at high school and the first lesson was all about Vesuvius erupting (that's about all I remember from the lessons!).

I think Frank's song was supposed to be totally out-of-fashion with the time (early '70s) when Little Richard rock 'n' roll was peak cool. Due to it's influence on early Beatles etc.

Nell Sun

Yep, famously buried Pompeii in volcanic ash.

Josh, great reaction bro 😂 🤣. I always understood it that the song he'd picked to sing was totally inappropriate for a holiday camp. Usually, camps like Butlins and Pontins were all about entertainment and a dull song like 'Early One Morning' - a 16th century song that tells the story of a "poor maiden," Mary who has been ill-used by her lover and is abandoned. It is just not the song a camp entertainer would sing; but it is one of the best-known traditional folksongs in Britain, which has been sung by generations of schoolchildren - again, Frank showing his naivety in the real world. Early One Morning https://g.co/kgs/GTmcoVU Frank didn't know any other songs, so he applied the lyrics to the music being played anyway, which is what made the scene funny 😄 😆.

Josh, I love how you defend Frank and look at the good side of all his errors, like saying the crib he made wasn't too bad and remarking on him looking to the future if the baby is born 'immaturely' lol - It is very endearing and shows Frank has made an impression on you as he did all of us.

Vesuvius was a volcano wasn't it?

Jehan Ariyaratnam

Yet another impressive episode, there are two terrific moments, one is hilariously funny, the other is quite sweet and tender. The tender bit, that wonderfully sweet moment where Betty details her pregnancy to a wonderfully naive Frank, Frank of course gets a little muddled, it's sweet and funny. The big comedy moment comes at the end, with a keen Frank on stage singing his tune......early one morning, and accidentally setting off his Vesuvius, it's side splitting, you can see all involved had great fun.

Matthew Towner

Frank carries the whole show. The other characters are mostly one-dimensional angry harassers! (Wish I had my own Betty who would put up with 'the cat doing a whoopsie in my beret'...)

Nell Sun

First!
