The Young Ones: Season 1, Episode 5 Interesting

Comments

The singer in the band in this show was Neneh Cherry who went on to have a successful solo career, best known for “Buffalo Stance”!

Lol I could imagine this show would shake things up 🤣

It was a weird one lol but I enjoyed it. Thanks bud, very interesting.

My parents loved this show when i was very young and i can imagine back then it was like a breath of fresh air when British comedy was becoming stale or too safe. The vhs was on a lot in my house so i do have nostalgia for this show. Although I do find it a bit too bizarre and i don’t really enjoy the more surreal scenes away from the main characters such as the four horsemen of the apocalypse and the two demons torturing a guy in an earlier episode. Just never funny to me just tedious to rewatch. I don’t think it’s quite the classic it’s considered to be, it’s certainly not up there with Bottom, but there some occasionally very funny scenes, mainly with Rick, Vyvyan and Neil. Sorry Mike. Have to say also, some of bands featured are truly awful particularly the one in this episode. Pure cringe. I prefer the second series overall but i think most of the cast went on to do way better stuff after this show.

This was a surreal episode, the next one takes it a bit further but is still very funny imo. Series 2 is amazing, so many classic episodes like Bambi, Cash, Sick etc. Gotta be honest it's so interesting to gauge the opinion of someone who is of a younger generation and from a different country. I'm surprised you've made it this far to be honest, but it is worth the wait. I showed my kids The Young Ones and Bottom when they were early teens. They loved Bottom straight away but TYO not so much on first watches. For a bit if historical context - while some of the jokes haven't aged well and some scenes seem pointless, at the time of its initial broadcast it was unlike anything that came before. The stuff from the 70s which you've watched in the past like Fawlty Towers and Porridge were as edgy as it got. Sure there was Python prior to that but they were very much upper class kids being surreal, and very good at it too. But a bunch of grungy students living in filth, doing toilet humour and shoehorning in political stuff, having great bands like Madness, Motorhead and The Damned on etc was truly revolutionary in our young minds. There were only 4 TV channels back then, no catch up or on demand facility. Pretty much every kid in the yard the next day in school were quoting lines from the show. My brother and I could recite sections of episodes word for word. If you read an interview with any great comedy writer/performer in the UK who came of age in the 80s and 90s, every one will cite TYO and Rik Mayall/Ben Elton as a huge influence, from Simon Pegg to Steve Coogan to the team behind Red Dwarf. The second series has a different type of atmosphere, there's still some bizarre tangents in each show but I think you get used to that.

I still want Mike's 'Hussar' party jacket.

You were right Josh, the religious woman was Dawn French. The woman in the hat, whose bag and tampon Rik was messing with is Jennifer Saunders, Ade Edmondson's wife :) She and Dawn French are/were a comedy duo for decades (French & Saunders)
