So glad you did this one.. Please consider "They Live". Also by John Carpenter, also starring Kurt Russell.

Oliver Prime

Add "Escape From New York" to your list of movies, if you haven't already seen it Josh. (more Kurt Russell and John Carpenter)

This movie is the very antithesis of the Marvel movies, and of the 80's "action hero" movies. You're supposed to think that Kurt Russell is the hero of the movie but he's not. He's highly inept, always late to the party and literally only had one moment where he's actually useful at the end! The "American hero" is the comic relief and not the actual hero.

Pretty much a lot of what I was going to say if someone else hadn't.

Works fine on Onehub. Some browsers can have trouble with Googledrive and mediafire

Danny

Alan Rabbitte

That is awesome man 👍

Thanks bud, I have seen The Thing, I couldn't think of the name. It's a great movie to watch in a snowstorm.

After Work Reactions

That sounds great. Like a horrific Tango and Cash

Saul

I have to say, I know he's made some iconic films but I'm not a massive Carpenter fan. And I'd never seen this, just heard of it a lot, and watching it with modern eyes...well to me it's not that funny and not that exciting. I think of the best modern action-comedy movies, even the best Marvel movies, how tightly they're written by comparison, how punchy and funny at the same time, and how much this genre of film has improved since. I think we overrate this era of cinema just a touch. But I acknowledge completely that films like this had to blaze a trail for subsequent films to progress. I love the magic effects; they're fantastic. The magical scenes are great. And that is an absolutely outrageous John Wayne that Kurt Russell is doing throughout the movie. He's chewing scenery throughout. A star.

Saul

That is a really good line, he was great in this movie.

With you mentioning Nicolas Cage , PLEASE put Face/Off on the next movie poll if you haven't seen it 😎

Danny

Kurt Russel has lots of great films. Some of my other favourites of his are Stargate, The Thing, Backdraft, Soldier, Tombstone, Tango & Cash, Escape From La and Escape From NY

Danny

On the bluray extras for this it shows some storyboard ideas at the time for a potential sequal to this based on the ending, showing Jack and the Monster driving around in the truck together as a sort of buddy movie 😅

Danny

This was a childhood favourite of mine so rose tinted glasses on 🤓 Have always been a Carpenter fan, from assault on precinct 13, Halloween and escape from NY Always though Carpenter and Russell brought good entertainment together

Gareth Hood

Lo-Pan delivers one of my favourite lines from all of cinema in this movie; "Now this really pisses me off to no end!". I love how goofy and down to Earth he is, despite being the main antagonist and a powerful dark sorcerer.

Right Said Brett

JOSH: You're absolutely correct that Raiden from Mortal Kombat was directly inspired by this movie, as was Shang Tsung inspired by Lo-Pan.

Right Said Brett

The entire premise/joke of this film is often lost on audiences. The whole point is that the main protagonist/hero of the narrative is Wang Chi and Jack Burton is the comic relief sidekick, but because Jack is American, he automatically assumes and acts as though he is the hero of the story, despite being a blowhard, clumsy doofus who's completely out of his depth and clueless as to what's going on. It's a meta commentary and subversion upon the nature of American characters being the hero in action movies by default. The opening scene with Egg Shen talking to the attorney in the office was a studio mandated reshoot. They forced John Carpenter to shoot that scene and add it to the movie because they felt that it wasn't made clear enough that Jack Burton was the hero, despite that being the entire point of the movie; that he isn't. That's why there are lines in that introductory sequence of Egg Shen saying that the City owes Jack a debt and that he's a hero. The studio also mandated that Egg Shen demonstrate his magical powers in that scene, despite John Carpenter wanting to keep that aspect as a surprise until during the gang war scene. John Carpenter HATES that scene with a passion, as well he should, because it completely misses the point and was insisted upon by studio exes who missed the point, just as general audiences missed the point. Jack Burton is NOT the hero of the story (despite admittedly being the one to ultimately kill Lo-Pan - although that was only because of Egg Shen's potion giving Jack the reflexes to do so).

Right Said Brett

JOSH: Listening to the intro... are you implying that you've never seen John Carpenter's The Thing?! If not, please add it to the nominations.
