Red Dwarf: Season 11 Episode 2 Samsara

You make some good points, although sex out of wedlock might be considered immoral by the karma drive even if homosexuality itself isn’t also group sex between all of them or sex with an android or person of another species like cat, might be seen as immoral as well.

WELCOME TO JUSTICE WORLD. Wait which episode was this again? ;) Thanks J.

I feel like this episode had a fantastic sci-fi premise (basically the current tendency of massive corporations, especially on social media, to jump on arbitrary, self-serving and frequently hypocritical moral bandwagons, projected into the future) but let the comic potential slowly slip from its grasp as the story progressed. Once they worked out what the karma drive was, and that it had been inverted, coupled with the fact that the crew had resorted to having orgies to avert its effects (presumably because small acts of immorality were no longer enough to placate it), Doug Naylor could have had a field day with the Dwarf boys needing to do the most immoral things they could possibly imagine to each other - far more than just punches or insults - in order to escape. Having sex with one another? To their relief, Kryten will point out that none of them are married, and homosexuality ceased to be considered immoral long before the karma drive was built, so it wouldn't register. One of them might have to die instead? Lister will nobly volunteer himself, but such self-sacrifice is inherently a moral good, so the victim would have to be someone terrified and wholly unwilling... like Rimmer. While Cat gleefully weighs up the options for doing Rimmer in, Kryten realises that letting Rimmer live his miserable life, potentially for all eternity, is a far greater act of cruelty than allowing him to find peace in death, and is able to "checkmate" the karma drive into letting them go with that moral reasoning. With a few extra gags sprinkled in, that kind of third act would have been more in line with classic Dwarf, and there'd have been plenty of time to fit it in if the Newton/Archimedes dialogue between Lister and Cat (which definitely got flogged to death over the course of five or six minutes) had been pared back to its funniest bits.

The image of Lister eating a full-on ice cream in bed is just weirdly hilarious. Even the bit that fell off was perfectly timed.

True. The sad irony is, Rimmer is actually pretty smart too; his neuroses and unpleasant attitude just hold him back. Ace Rimmer is proof of his potential, whilst the alternate Lister, Spanners, was just a less lazy and more hardworking Lister; showing that as you say, Lister has a lot of potential but its his lazy attitude that's the issue. Rimmer has potential too, but his awful upbringing (which he isn't entirely wrong to blame) really buried it deep.

ALW

So true man, that's a great way to put it!

Lol 🤣🤣🤣 they are so goofy.

In regards to Lister being smart, if you think back to The Inquisitor when Lister judges himself he says he has brains and ability that he's too lazy to use. Lister is smart, he can play pool with planets, how many times has he got them out of trouble? This is another HUGE reason Rimmer resents Lister. Rimmer tries SO hard to be the smart, brave charismatic one while Lister doesn't try at all and hits all three out the park. He's the kid at school that fucks around all year and drags everyone else down, and then gets straight A's.

The dice is like Rimmer's Risk story again from Meltdown, only not as funny 😂

R- kryten, if you weren't so ugly I would kiss you. K- How about a handshake sir? R- Still too ugly! 😂🤣

The banner still has The Royale Family on Thursday. This is fake news.
