We have some questions...

Recently we were contacted by a label asking us to react to Yunchan Lim! This has got us thinking...If we were to film reactions to classical music performances, what kind of commentary would you be looking for from us?

Technique explanation? Facts about the pieces being played? Analysis on the chords & melodies of the piece or should we focus more on the performers delivery?

Asking because some of the reactors contacted me saying "I know how to analyze pop, but when it comes to the classical music I play every day....I don't even know where to start! What are the expectations from our viewers?"

Comments

Definitely helpful, thank you!

I watched the analysis from 'tonebase Piano' for Yunchan Lim's performance at the Cliburn competition. It's very heavy on techniques, but some how interesting enough to keep me focusing till the end. (I'm just casual listener without knowledge about music theories). So I think besides technical stuffs, I might want to know how each reactors think about his delivery/his interpretation of the piece that make him different from other pianists. I guess if pop singers have personal style, then may be pianists also the same. Hope it's helpful.

What I personally would love to see is a reaction to the delivery of the artist playing the instrument, maybe with a little bit of background on the piece, but I prefer it to be focused on the performance itself, as I think reading on a classical piece or its analysis is a google search away. But what unique explanation or commentary your reactors can give is a pear review on how an artist is interpreting the piece and how they are using techniques to deliver emotions, if that makes sense.

ALL OF THE ABOVE: I started out watching your reaction videos to BTS late 2017/early 2018. I ♥️💜💖 your videos cuz I learned so much about music. The standout for me was the reaction to JIMIN’S LIE because I saw in real time the reactors coming to their conclusions❣️Loved the joie de vivre & enthusiasm of the reactors.

With Classical Pieces, it's probably worth it to do a bit of an intro on who composed it to whom, why and what for. Give context to the pieces. Then, for the performance side, there's room to think about why the musician decided to emphasize and emote certain things, and why those things work or don't. Classical Music has this reputation of being immutable, and that people involved in it are elitists. This reputation is sometimes warranted, but it doesn't have to be. Letting people see and hear how much room there actually is in interpreting even the most known works, it comes down to making the process a bit more accessible, by demystifying some of the parts. Basically, show us how the sausage is made.

I have no idea how you should do it. I do know I would love to see it, and I also know that you smart, passionate people will figure it out and do your typical fine job. I'm excited about the idea and think plenty of others will be too.

I think I would be wanting to know about technique because you would catch and understand things I wouldn't, which I would think would include notes about delivery since technique informs performance and vice versa..probably? I would also still want the chord analysis and some of the same elements we get from the pop songs analysis, you know, key and modality, etc.

Actually, if it comes to reactions, I am torn to its channel bcz I am expecting the other musics’ reactions but regarding its channel name that has “classical musicians”, it’s like all of your fields. Maybe you should write in the title of non-classical songs with “NON-classical song” .. not sure either 🙈
