[Talking Dad] Ep. 35 - The Jellicle Ball!
Added 2020-06-17 06:18:40 +0000 UTC
In an extra long Talking Dad, we reminisce on one of our favorite episodes, have an incredibly long discussion about spiritualism and horoscopes, and Beth checks in on the P.O. Box!
I went to culinary school for baking and pastries and you need to back off 🤣 calling out my entire people

I know this is a late comment and maybe you all have changed this in the more recent episodes, but please create a separate pod where you just shoot the shit about life, art, and whatever else. I LOVE both the life convos and learning about behind the scenes and these episodes never satisfy either. So please split them out, that would rock! Thank you and love all your content!

It's called Swimming to Freedom: My Escape from China and the Cultural Revolution by Kent Wong.
You should definitely read it! I did and it was incredibly gripping, one of the best autobiographies I've read!

In my experience, cooking is art and baking is science. You can kinda just throw a bunch of stuff together based on vibes for cooking and it normally turns out pretty well. However, for baking, measurements and ratios count. You can do what feels like the exact same thing twice and one time it is amazing and the next time it is an aberration. Baking is way harder than cooking.

I have just gotten into this and am binging everything. Hearing Freddy talk has been very weird in a familiar not familiar way. But hearing him talk about his dad just stopped me dead. I had already left for France but my very silent father told my sisters about the fact that he had escaped by swimming to macro. 2 attempts. First time caught and they lost some people. Second time was ok,etc. But just weird having that odd feeling of "kindred spirit" throughout the hours of orevious episodes and then that story just sending echos through me.

I think it’s more so Freddie is constantly a buzz kill and won’t let people believe whatever they want. He has to be right and get the last word in but hey, they’re friends at the end of the day

Wow, Will got so triggered when Freddie presented some research helping to debunk horoscopes.
I get that Will is sensitive but choose a lane, either understood you have a strong response to disagreements and choose your words and keep quieter; or continue to bogart 80% of the conversation and accept people will disagree with you then learn to deal with it.

Question for Will: was it Donald Sinta that you played saxophone for?? I also went to school for saxophone and got wrecked by my professor who was a student of Eugene Rousseau - another one of the “Grandfathers of Saxophone” in the US.

There's negative and positive Christian morals. I am in no way defending the negative effects Christianity has had on the US but there's no way that's the kinds of morals that were being discussed in the podcast. Regardless, a lot of Christian people are the exact ones who won't follow said morals, ones of forgiveness, understanding, etc. Instead they are some of the most bigoted people. So just because the religion itself preaches good values doesn't mean the people "following" it will. (Btw this isn't a lecture, and I'm sure this isn't news to you, I just really need to point this out since obviously they in the podcast don't mean anything about kidnapping and killing native kids)

Yeah, as a native person that sorta hit me like a brick. I think I get what he meant (that a lot of the moral movements/legal things in America have been influenced by Christian-ish values even if they're not specifically Christian) but also like, what christian morals, the ones that jusified kidnapping and killing native kids?

2022-08-19 16:54:08 +0000 UTC
*winces at the assertion that America's morals are only "strong" because of Christian influence, as a Jew who's been directly impacted oppressively by American Christian morality, & also is familiar with how American Christianity as an institution tried to genocide the indigenous populations & excused the subjugation of enslaved populations of color*

I'd say Clueless holds up pretty well, like you have some tokenism with Dionne and Murray but they were still lovable and the comedy of Christian being gay isn't directed at him but Cher utterly failing to seduce him.

It’s not that I want them to change who they are(and having watched and listened to Freddie and the gang since the first few rocketjump videos I know they won’t!) it’s that a lot of these conversations might be better placed in another podcast that’s not focused on DND. Which would make it easier for people like me.

I listen to this podcast to hear more from them, not to hear about their game. The reason listening to dungeons and daddies is fun is that they aren’t afraid to be themselves. I’m really worried this comment will make them second guess their “style” and how they mesh together.

I understand where you are coming from, but I really like that they include some real life stuff. It reminds me that these are real people using their real lives to influence characters, and I find that endearing. At the same time, I understand the escapism other people seek. It sucks knowing that there is no way for them to please all of us. Your point about segments makes sense. They started it with the "favorite bit" in the last two, maybe that can continue to break it into DnD up front and then fade into casual convo at the end, so if people tune out they dont miss DnD stuff

An interesting point on Astrology is that the current signs are about a month off. I found an article that talks a little about it. Also there should be 13 signs instead of 12. https://www.ctvnews.ca/zodiac-signs-are-off-by-a-month-expert-says-1.596266

I was just hoping for some more talk about the story or DMing or answering more questions from fans. While the conversation was pretty interesting overall it’s just very very very much not why I subscribe to this Patreon.
I don’t know, I’ve been going to protests in support of blm and such. Then trying to be a force of good in my work(my job is kinda parallel to police) so when I turn on this podcast I just want to be absorbed in the fantasy and humor of the world that these people have created and take a break from the exhausting real world for a bit.
It feels strange complaining about this kind of stuff, I just wish they would separate it Into segments of some kind or a whole other podcast so it would be easier to skip the “bleh” parts.

The first twenty minutes, with all the crapping on other media, was pretty brutal (although Anthony made some interesting points). But I’m so glad I powered through, it was a great episode overall. I think I need to remember not to expect as much editing in the Talking Dads.

IIRC, in The Replacements, the owners weren't the good guys. They just wanted to make money while the players were on strike. Some just bought whole teams. It was the head coach that asked for complete control to hire people for the love of the game.
