I read the books before the series came out and was fully prepared for a terrible adaptation, was so happy to be wrong (at least for the most part). Tyrion (the dwarf) was actually quite ugly in the books, the actor they got to portray him (Peter Dinklage) is much more attractive, but his acting is excellent so no one is complaining. The quality of actors as a whole in this series was great.
