This group of young interns and a junior scientist thought they saw an opportunity to get a thorough physical study done of the Faceless Fish specimen before the team actually assigned to do it could. Get that paper on Dr. Syde's desk before the official team, and that looks real good come promotion time.
However, there was a reason for the delay in the approval of human handling, it was not yet determined if the Faceless Fish was a maneater. Her sluggish behaviour gave the team a false bravado, and flaunted with live prey so brazenly, she saw her chance and ate them all.
