end of 2023 post!

hello, it's the end of 2023 so this is a summary of everything game-devvy i did this year...!

it was a busy year for me since i quit my job at the end of march to be a fully indie dev starting april. i was able to make this decision largely because of having your patreon support here, so thank you!! i'm still figuring things out to try to find a good balance for myself but i think i'm doing ok so far (:

now, to list things up chronologically...

i also exhibited at a bunch of events (some personally, some with just my game being exhibited for me!):

besides that i did a bunch of other updates like porting games to new platforms & adding translations & new content stuff... honestly there was so much stuff i might have missed things in this post.

i think i actually probably did too much this year so i need to recalibrate for next year so i can make sure my pace is sustainable & i don't burn out! my main goal for 2024 will be working on finishing marron so i can release it for pc & gameboy (& probably no longer android... while i was previously planning on doing this, i am unhappy with google play as a platform right now because of issues i've been having with their support as well as their recent policy updates) - with luck i will be releasing for windows/mac/linux for steam/itch & physical carts as well as digital roms for gameboy!

thank you for all your support throughout this - & see you in 2024! 💜

(postcards for december will be sent out after this post!)

end of 2023 post!

YEEAAAHHHH!!! also that is so tragic, would have been excellent to see a killer npckc entry 🔥🔥 but I'm also glad u didn't try to squeeze it into an already insanely busy year ‼️‼️‼️

ur year CRAZYYY!!!! so cool!!!! amazing looking back and seeing what all can be done in a year. 2024 goals i have a suggestion (it is to game jam with me) (😇) (🥺)

it has come so far and that's incredible...! hopefully the work of a single game dev goes smoothly! and not too stressful...

yeah... the 20 tester requirement is a fairly recent requirement so i'm still hoping that maybe they will reconsider because it is honestly really dumb....... 😔 while i'm personally not affected directly since my account is older, i don't think it bodes well for how google play thinks of small devs on their platform. i am really curious about how things will go with epic / google though because more options for app distribution is a very nice thing!!

Nope, I haven't joined the developer program. Wow, that's...I don't know what to say about that. That's ridiculous. I can see why you wouldn't want to do that, and frankly, I don't want to either. Fortunately, you can just distribute a .apk file from a website and Android users can install that, and depending on how far I get with the app, I think that's what I'll do. You do need to handle payment yourself though. Google just lost the anti-trust suit against Epic with remedies to come in March next year; so hopefully that will mean there will be more options for app distribution on Android in the future.

quite a lot of your personal information will also be required to be shown publicly on your app page if you plan on charging for it: https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/13634888?hl=en&sjid=12703134751954522592-AP

have you already joined the developer program and if yes was it before November 13? if not, as a personal dev (assuming you are not a company) you will need 20 testers for 2 weeks before you can distribute your app: https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/14151465?hl=en

> their recent policy updates I'm not much of a phone user, but I am interested in developing a mobile app or two in the future, so I'm curious what the policy updates were that turned you off the platform. Apple's app store requirements are famously harsh, but Google Play doesn't *seem* too bad on the surface...
