WOW! The rest of the story sounds absolutely stunning!! I SO wish we could somehow get it animated someday!

Okay but... "How can they just leave us hanging and not have another season? That's cruel..." pretty much sums up half my experience with anime. XD You've been spoiled here. It's generally a rule for me also that I don't sponsor the incomplete ones. Unless I can share the ending somehow. This one was definitely too good to be held back by only being half the story.

Oh! and I forgot to mention... I absolutely love when an ending mirrors the beginning. If you go back and rewatch the first episode, Yuki's opening narration about how much she loves school... how it's like it's own little country... is almost identical to the speech she makes at the end, convincing all the zombies to go home. I know it's been months for you, but I binge-watched this one in 2 days. Gave me chills to recognize it.

This carries through to the final showdown with the Randall corporation. Kurumi's been getting weaker and weaker... Miki seeing Kei at the end literally comes back to bite her, as she does the exact thing Kurumi did-- went to take out a zombie only to realize it was her old friend and freeze up-- so now she's bitten too. Ri's stuck somewhere she can't contact them... Yuki's the one to make that final radio call. And her delusions never really go away... They just shift to make her more useful. So she's not exactly the most eloquent in pleading for their lives... But it reminds the people at Randall that the decisions they're making effect real people. It's not just cold, logical military strategy. So it causes the group to fracture and thankfully, the side in favor of saving the girls wins out.

The main thing about the conflict at the end... the overall message this story is trying to tell... It's about isolation. Losing your humanity in an effort to save humanity. The militants at the college have some really strict policies about doing full body searches every time someone returns from a mission. And anyone who starts to show any signs of infection is immediately killed by their former comrades. Which all breaks down once the infection goes airborne and they're all in danger whether they've been in close contact with the zombies or not. In the leader's final moments, he sees all the people he made the call to eliminate coming back to get him. It's a really powerful moment.

What was really interesting to me is that, though the anime definitely changes some things, it's still a pretty faithful adaptation. Faithful enough that they really could pick this back up right where they left off and animate the rest. (Makes me kind of crazy that it's never been completed, actually.)

An interesting thing about the manga is that this foray into the basement shelter to get medicine for Kurumi... actually was not that dramatic. Miki handles it fairly easily in the manga. Where everything goes to shit is shortly after Kurumi recovers, where they find a radio in the broadcast room and are able to send out some messages to see if anyone will respond. A helicopter from the Randall Corporation does arrive... but doesn't seem to see the girls on the roof. When there's no sign of rescuable life, the pilot turns it into a suicide mission, crashing into the school grounds and setting fire to everything, taking out as many zombies as possible in the process and being the thing to damage the school so that they have to have their graduation and head out for "college."

True to form, you uploaded this shortly after I left for work. ^^' Looks like someone beat me to giving you the manga details. I'll add a few things.

RyssaVionus

Those are GREAT details! Thanks!!

In case you were wondering who that was at the end walking to school it was Kei but she is a zombie which is was Miki is sad at the end. Also if you want to know what happens next this next part is heavy spoilers but they go to the college and find a group of survivors. About 10 or more people in that group problems is that there are two groups in the college. The classical asshole group who don't trust anybody but themselves and the other group who let them in. Of course since one side let them in both groups choices to live in different part of the college. Of course bad things happen we find out Yuri big titty girl went crazy and that Kurumi shovel girl is a hybrid of zombie and human now so much so that other zombie won't attack her. Also the college gets attack almost all the asshole group and a few few our college group dies. The 4 girl finds a doctor who is trying to make a cure. We then find out that Randall is a big Company that took over the Military and became one of the last government groups. Basically they are one of humanity last hopes. After Kurumi get sick and the Doctor gets infected the group talks about how Kurumi felt better at school and that they had medicine at the school. Near the end of the story the Doctor was able to find out before she died that the river near the high school has some kind of chemical or bacteria that slows down and cures the undead. Of course while all this is happen they find out that Randall was planning on nuking the city to deal with the undead. With all this happen each girl goes back to school to get the Randall Company's attention since a helicopter fell on school grounds. Yuki was able to get a walkie talkie and tell them they had a cure. We find out that while Yuki is giving her cure plus motivational speech Randall Company was destroy itself from the inside out because of how they want to deal with the city and possible survivors. Because of Yuki all of the girl and the remaining college people were saved. 3 years later the manga ends with Yuri working for a district chef to help rebuild society. Kurumi lost the uses of her legs and chooses to became a doctor to help others as well as herself. Miki became a explorer/helper she goes around collect books and making sure places are getting better as a whole but I guess you can call her a librarian. Yuki became a teacher like Megu-nee.
