Your NSFW Content Creators Need Your Help
Added 2022-02-10 16:56:28 +0000 UTCHey everyone,
I'm hard at work on the next update, but I'm checking in today because I need your help with something in the meantime.
The US Senate has revived the horribly nightmarish 'Earn It' Act from 2020, which is being pushed by a bunch of rabidly anti-porn/anti-LGBTQ organizations masquerading as anti-CSE activists. The bill they helped Senators Graham and Blumenthal craft will weaken the section-230 protections that legal NSFW content on the internet (such as my erotica stories) depends on to survive and create a panel (made up of these same anti-porn/anti-LGBTQ activists) to craft a set of 'best practices' that public-facing internet sites (like Patreon, Twitter, DeviantArt, Amazon, and so-on) will have to follow--in theory to curb the existence of CSEM (Child Sexual Exploitation Material) on their sites, but likely extending to a wide variety of LEGAL NSFW content as well. . . 'just to be safe'--in order to avoid being held liable for illegal content discovered on their websites. Every major LGBTQ agency in the country has warned that this will likely lead to public-facing internet sites doing Tumblr-like PURGES of all NSFW content (as well as the open discussion of any topics that these anti-porn/anti-LGBTQ activists consider 'objectionable') in order to avoid any possibility of liability. Encryption will also be weakened, with the EFF and ACLU and digital privacy/cyber-security experts all agreeing that the bill ushers in a future where private companies and government personnel have the ability to read each and every text message, sext, dirty discord rp, Google Drive file, or Patreon post that is ever uploaded to the internet and scan it for what that individual happens to believe is 'objectionable' or 'questionable' content.
The threat that this bill poses to my livelihood is not small. If Patreon and Amazon and other sites all decide to purge all their NSFW content to avoid any possibility of liability, my career as an independent writer of TG fiction may well be over, as well as the careers of hundreds of thousands more independent NSFW content creators around the world. But this bill goes beyond threatening just my writing career and threatens both the continued existence of legal NSFW and Gender Transformation porn/erotica/smut online anywhere in the world as well as the digital right to privacy for each and every one of us. The US still hosts the majority of the world's internet infrastructure, and these changes, if they happen, if the bill passes, if it survives likely court challenges, will impact everyone, no matter where they happen to live.
Please, if you live in the U.S., visit this website https://www.noearnitact.org/index.html#sign, sign the petition, then call your representative and Senators and even the Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and demand that they not pass the bill. Tell them you will not vote for them (or Democratic candidates) if they do.
If you're not in the U.S., but you are active on social media, please feel free to get involved by joining the attempt to raise awareness on Twitter and other sites. Use the hash-tag #StopTheEarnItAct2022 on Twitter to join the fight.
The bill passed out of its Senate Committee this morning and is headed to the floor of the full Senate for debate and consideration. We still have time to stop it IF WE ACT FAST.
Thank you,
Zoe
