EPISODE 8: THE BARGAINER'S DREAM

In this episode, we introduce the new reality that begins to form in the aftermath of the empowered surrender... in other words, the world of an individual whose depression has at least partially gone into remission. To prepare us for this topic, I've attempted to synthesize some of the major ideas we've covered so far—we return to metaphysics, the ineffable, the dream vs materialist views of reality, reference points, the "radical elsewhere," and how these more philosophical concepts relate to the idea of the "lost object." In the second half of the episode, we explore the phrase "the opposite of depression is expansion," the experience of atmosphere, how to go "questing," and the necessity of thwarting our own logic in overcoming depression.

While many new ideas are introduced in this episode, my intention was to structure it in such a way that it would be:

A. An introductory preview of the topics covered in the first half of this series

B. The go-to episode for anyone looking for a review of past material

We will continue to dig deeper into the bargainer's dream and expansion in the next cycle of stages (The Labyrinth, The Reclamation of the Soul, and The Third Function).

The Bargainer's Dream (text from the original guide):

With the birth of the rebel comes the birth of a new dream to stand in for the old. I refer to it as the Bargainer’s Dream because the dreamer has not yet dismantled the attachments and values that caused the first to fail. The new Dream is likely very similar to the old on a deeper level—after quitting a prestigious job and swearing off grind culture, the dreamer may chase “success” in less obvious ways.

Comments

Loved this episode - esp the artist vs AI, window vs wall/mirror analogy to meaning. Particularly so given I feel part of my bargainer's dream is a return to art and how expansive/healing thats been for me... though have some trepidation that I'm not in the clear! Thanks so much for this incredibly thoughtful work ✨️

no worries! Just wanted to clarify so that I know which transcript to take a look at!

Ms. Mergen: My mistake; I was trying to comment on ep. 7. Sorry for the confusion.
