I probably shouldn't make this video

PATRONS: This was fun to make and probably one of my favorite results.  This should be a popular video.  I think the "Send Us Your Stuff" program results in some creative episodes we wouldn't otherwise have.

TODAY'S POST (4th of 8 for February)

Petzl has SOME holes in their Sm'D and Spirt carabiners so can you drill holes in yours to save weight? Elliott Bernhagen sent me a few carabiners with a LOT of holes in them to see if they were super good enough.    The blog has our data at https://www.hownot2.com/post/carabiner-holes

BEHIND THE SCENES

Officially order the linear actuator and all the parts to make a fatigue and abrasion testing machine.  Building out the jib today in my garage.  I have a very understanding girlfriend :).

Comments

Yeah absolutely, I would be concerned modifying forged materials and the savings appear worthless anyway (I liked the belly pat point), but curiosity and all. I would guess if the corners were left alone you might see the spines breaking first.

I still don't think the weight savings would be enough, especially with smaller holes. Plus the holes that come on rated gear are forged into the carabiner. Drilling the holes can put stress cracks where it can start to split apart and even a small hole would compromise the metal.

I would be interested to see less aggressive holes. Some of those were in the "meat" of the inner/outer ridges if you will. Maybe keeping them within the thin part and not putting them near the corners so much would bring things to "good enough" (doubt "super"). Interesting too in the carabiners with holes from manufacturing they're all close to the gate before the first real corner. Still not worth it but curious!
