I think you'll keep enjoying this story all the way through Serenity (Movie). Mal is a complicated man, but don't be too hard on him for shooting the horse; he was willing to make the deal and leave, it was Patience who insisted on turning it into an unnecessary gunfight, and her who used the horse for cover. All the blame goes on her. His choice was to take out the horse, her cover, or get shot by her while trying to spare the horse but get to her. Always blame the one who uses the horse for cover, for being that kind of selfish prick.

I'm pleased you liked this first episode. Some episodes are a bit lighter some have more suspense, but each one is a great story and part of a great story. Here's a bit of info you may find interesting. While the exteriors of the ship are models and partial sets, the interior of the ship was built full-size and in one continuous set. The cast was really walking around the interior of a full-size mockup of the ship, which lends a remarkable continuity to shots of them moving from one part of the ship to another. By the time Whedon had put together the funding to make the movie the original Serenity interior had been torn down, so a new ship interior had to be built for the film.

Hey, sooooo glad you liked this show. It is my favorite of all time and the whole cast has been great in everything they've done since. My cousin is in a documentary about the fans (browncoats) who convinced them to make the follow up movie.

The premature cancellation of Firefly is one of the great missteps in recent TV history. The only good thing that came out of it was that it motivated Whedon to make the film "Serenity," a movie so well scripted that even people who don't like science fiction enjoy it. Also, Deadwood is excellent. The marvelous Ian McShane, whom you'll likely know from "American Gods" won a Best Actor Golden Globe for his work in Deadwood.

Some of the best stuff written for television. I think you'd really like Deadwood as well. Not quite as lighthearted as Firefly, but the writing and acting are some of the best out there.
