***Patron Request*** 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY Full Watch Along

Thank you for requesting I watch this movie, Motodork. I loved it. It also unofficially kicks off my Classics Series. I'm dedicated to watching at least one CLASSIC movie a month. Be sure to vote on my poll for what Classic movies I watch next. So far, Dr. Strangelove looks to continue my journey with Stanley in May. Lots of amazing Classics I am looking forward to checking out this year for the first time! ๐Ÿ’›

If you're interested in taking a really deep dive into 2001, I'd like to recommend the book, The Lost Worlds of 2001, by Arthur C. Clarke on the the production and writing of the movie. I think this book will answer a lot of questions on what Clarke and Kubrick had in mind in their own words. Also, I'm going to go out on a limb and recommend watching 2010 (1984). It's not a great movie but was co-written by Clarke and the director, Peter Hyams. The storytelling is more direct and less arthouse than Kubrick's 2001. But, it also relatable characters and has some fun action sequences. If you have any interest in seeing what comes next, here it is.

Yes it is VERY obvious. I love Interstellar ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ’ฏ๐Ÿ’ฏ

Thank you for explaining all of this to me, Moto Dork. I really appreciate that ๐Ÿค—. And thank YOU for recommending that I watch this. This is a film that I have wanted to watch for decades and just never did. I'm happy I finally did - thanks to you ๐Ÿค—โœŒ๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ’œ

As Poole flies out into space, I just realized that you SO need to watch Dark Star, which is John Carpenter's first film, written and starring Dan O'Bannon, the guy who wrote Alien... It's a total comedic version of 2001!

I'm writing all this as I re-watch it with you. It really is a visionary film. Setting the tone, now, for half a century of science fiction (man, am I OLD!).

Hard to believe, here we are, 20 years after this film is supposed to have taken place, and all of the things that have come true... and all of the things we have failed to bring to fruition!

The "Grip Soles" were based upon the then very new concept of velcro... That kept the people anchored in micro-gravity.

The proto-sapiens in the film's opening were created by the amazing Stuart Freeborn, who created Chewbacca. Their lip action is the same mechanism, that gave Chewie his snarl. Absolute genius!

Tool use let us defend ourselves, let us exploit food resources we couldn't before. And meat provides far more calories required by larger brains.

The monolith's right angles clearly mark it as artificial. A made thing. It's proportions are 1 x 4 x 9, the squares of 1,2,3.

Rated G did not mean "for kids" (and certainly Kubrick had no such intent). G just meant it contained no offensive language or sexual situations.

Also it should now be obvious that Interstellar was Christopher Nolan's love letter to Kubrick.

I'm so happy to have been able to watch this film with you. Like I said, you don't have to understand it, but you do need to experience it at least once. The monolith was placed on earth 4 million years ago and it "jump started" human intelligence. Once that was done, the aliens took the monolith and buried it on the moon. The reason for that was they wanted to ensure humanity re-discovered the monolith when they had reached the intelligence and technology to achieve space travel. Once it was uncovered on the moon, it began signaling the much larger monolith floating out near Jupiter to alert the aliens that mankind had indeed achieved that technological level. Thank you so much for taking my suggestion to watch this film.

MotoDork

A 41 minute intro sequence (with an amazing score) that covers the evolution of intelligence from using tools to going into space. Kubrick dgaf

Trivia: The satellite we see after the jump cut from the bone is an orbiting nuclear warhead platform. We transition from the most powerful weapon at the dawn of man to the most powerful weapon of the 21st century.
