Thank you so much for sharing that the A stands for ally because I didn’t know that and I really do strive to be the best ally for any oppressed groups. At the same time I also understand the viewpoint that I will never *fully appreciate* the gay experience, the Black experience, the Jewish experience, etc. even though I sincerely do try! The best advice I can give is to my fellow cis straight white women is to be the ally that creates safe spaces. Be ok with the fact that our gay bffs don’t always want even their best Judys to accompany them to the bar, because gay bars are the one safe space for them to be themselves without fear of retribution. I won’t ever invite myself, I’ll only go if invited, and even then, I’m like, I don’t want to hinder them picking someone up because they’re afraid of what I MIGHT think. And coincidentally, I recently took a job working in a plus size clothing store called Torrid because I found out it’s a favorite of people all along the transitioning scale, of drag queens, or just men who enjoy occasional cross dressing. Last night a tall, skinny man in his 20’s, very handsome, probably always mistaken for being very straight, came in with his female bff, and he asked me where my long dresses were. When I tell you I found him the sparkliest, twirliest dresses, happily opened a dressing room, writing his very manly name on the dry erase placket on the dressing room door… after he picked out two dresses, he just opened right up and talked to me about how much hate he got on the east coast… I had to come home and decompress with a good cry because I can’t handle how anyone could ever be so cruel! At least once a week, I do a bra fitting for trans women, helping them find something that makes them feel more like the curvy lady they aspire to be. Just saying, if I can’t ever fully empathize despite my best efforts, I will forever strive to BE a safe space and refuse to turn a blind eye to hate.
