Very quick thoughts after the Yankees are told they’re out on Roki Sasaki

In news that hardly qualifies as surprising, the Yankees have been informed Japanese righty Roki Sasaki will not be signing with them, per Jack Curry. It was always a long shot. The Dodgers have been considered the favorite to sign Sasaki for over a year now. I think it’s 98% Dodgers, 1% Padres, 1% everyone else. We’ll find out for sure within the next 11 days (he must sign by Jan. 23).
The 2025 international signing period opens Wednesday and, now that they’ve been told they’re out on Sasaki, the Yankees can move onto other business. That includes signing their targeted prospects, potentially even some who wind up back on the market after a team reneges on the deal so they can pay Sasaki, and possibly trading bonus pool money to Sasaki’s chosen team. The Yankee still have an opportunity to use Sasaki to their advantage.
I had a quick blurb ready to go for Tuesday’s post on Sasaki, so that’s in the Content Graveyard now. Not much else to say otherwise. I didn’t expect Sasaki to sign with the Yankees (I hoped he would, but I didn’t expect it) so this isn’t really a letdown. It is what it is. At least now there’s no mystery, and the Yankees can go into the signing period Wednesday knowing their situation.

Boy, the days of Matsui, Kuroda and Tanaka are a (very) distant memory.
