The Yankees have lost the 2024 World Series

You gotta hand it to them. The 2024 Yankees stayed true to themselves to the very end. They made every defensive mistake in the book – dropped fly ball, bad throw, didn't cover first base, catcher interference, balk – and blew a 5-0 lead courtesy of five unearned runs with their season on the line in Game 5 of the World Series. First time all year they blew a five-run lead too, so good timing on that, guys.

There will be plenty of time to digest the World Series loss, but, I mean, they were down 3-0 in the series. I think we all expected them to lose at some point. Game 5 will be a long-lasting reminder that, no matter how much talent the Yankees had, they undermined themselves constantly with lazy, sloppy, undisciplined, fundamentally unsound play. The ending the 2024 Yankees deserved.

Comments

I bet Soto realizes this team was lucky to get to the series and signs with NYM, Philly or LAD in hopes of returning soon.

Hobeau

They stopped doing that because she and her representatives didn't appreciate her version of the song being synonymous with Yankee losses. Reasonably so. They really just shouldn't play anything other than generic music.

Antoine Roberts

That inning was so bad that afterward I found myself struggling to root for them the rest of the way and I've been rooting for this team my whole life

Joshua Wilson

I think the thing that kills me the most is that there were games that we SHOULD have won. Game one and the fifth inning of Game five will haunt me for a long time.

Carlos Herrera

Mike, thank you so much for your comprehensive and insightful coverage all season! You really helped keep me as sane as possible throughout this stressful series. Here's hoping the Yanks will actually take this embarrassment to heart and make serious change this offseason. This team has a multitude of holes that need to be plugged before seriously being considered a WS threat.

Phil

But there's no reason to presume anything. That's not how a pitcher is trained for that particular play. It's one of the most routine plays in baseball, it happens all the time, pitchers do fielding drills for that specific play in ST every year. It's not Cole's job to make assumptions, it's to run towards the bag up until the moment (if it comes) where Rizzo puts his hand up to indicate "I've got it". Until that moment arrives, Cole (or any P) needs to be moving to cover. There's really nothing else that needs to be said about it. Cole has been a Yankee for every day of Rizzo's Yankee career, he should know Rizzo's tendencies better than anybody.

Antoine Roberts

As bad as that inning was, imagine if it had been the 9th inning of game 7 and against the Mets. There I made everyone feel better.

B-Mo

You forgot the /s

Jingling Baby

Most Mets-like loss I can remember for the Yanks.

Allen Perkins

I'm going to be so sad / angry when they let Gleyber go.

Bill Larzelere

Just think about it and let your life go on. They are not that important. I will expect to win again when Cashman and Boone are gone, Until then, enjoy the wins, enjoy the ride and then find solace in the fact that you can watch the Giants continue to lose. Whoops!

Michael Mazzullo

Just remember, it's just a game. Plus, did anyone who's been a Yankee fan for any significant time, actually believe that this team, with all its obvious flaws, was going to win a WS? Was Rodon going to win?

Michael Mazzullo

Yes, Cole should have covered. But like everyone else watching the play, he presumably assumed that Rizzo would take the low risk play and just dash to the bag himself. Rizzo's attachment to the flip play is beyond logical - it's a riskier play and it will always make more sense to run to the bag when there is obviously time to do so. So I felt like the outcome was more on Rizzo than Cole, despite the fact that Cole can away looking like he botched the play.

DZB

What a pathetic performance when it's all on the line. The one play that will forever annoy me from that game it's the Rizzo one. His refusal to just run to the bag has always bothered me, and while Cole clearly should have covered, it's mostly Rizzo's fault. It was logical to assume that Rizzo would just grab the ball and touch the bag. Ugh.

DZB

That was truly one of the most heartbreaking experiences I’ve ever had in my life. Somehow found a way to make us feel significantly worse than we did after the flat performance in game 3- simply gave it away. Just shameful

Ryan Price

With the news that they're gonna bring back Boone, this team can kiss my motherfucking ass. Nepo Baby Failson Central between the owner and the manager. Pathetic garbage.

Nick Fugitt

Wanna echo the most important sentiment: thank you, Mike, for all you do. Fuck this team though.

Zack

Yes, but also…if Rizzo wasn’t a hobbled statue, he would have charged the ball and taken it himself. His bad defense was one of keys to the team sucking. Please let him retire.

Jingling Baby

Can't imagine what Cole's mind was thinking when he just...didn't run to cover the bag. Literally one of the most routine things that any RHP especially does countless times throughout their baseball playing lives, run towards the bag and keep moving until your 1B tells you otherwise (and, given that Rizzo prefers to flip to the bag and Cole's been a Yankee for every day that Rizzo's been here, he should know this better than anybody, that's another factor)...physical errors are one thing, they suck and shouldn't happen (that's why they're errors), but the mental errors are the ones that really kill you. Never an excuse for a mental error, they only happen from lapses in concentration, and having a lapse in concentration in an elimination game in the World Series? Christ.

Antoine Roberts

Congratulations to the LA Dodgers. They had the Yankees measure and easily deserved this. Much more professional baseball club and plenty of likeable guys in the team.

Brian

They used to play the Liza Minnelli version after losses.

Jingling Baby

Ugh….. that would literally be the most “Yankee” thing to do!

Jeffrey James

Hal is Cashman's whipping boy - sadly, he will just do whatever Cashman tells him to, which will mean we're probably stuck with Boone for another year.

Alex G

Boone has to be fired right? If not, what will be different next year because what year are the Yankees on with Boone and it is the same

William Holley

This game was a complete microcosm of what this team has looked like under Boone and his staff. Completely unprepared, poorly coached with atrocious fundamentals. Sadly, I don't think anyone gets fired outside of Luis Rojas who'd be nothing more than a scapegoat since who were the people that hired him? They better bring Soto back and add many reinforcements on top of that. After the catastrophe that was Rizzo, 1B must be a priority. Go call the Blue Jays and get Vlad Jr. They also need way more relief pitching with swing and miss, more starting pitching since Rodon isn't a #2 starter, a new 3B (since Jazz should be moved to the OF), and new 2B assuming Gleyber walks.

Alex G

Dodgers were better team with deeper line up but that game was just given away in 5th inning. Boone should go but won’t. Hal isn’t George and is happy just to compete

JimBearNJ

“That’s Life” would fit the aesthetic so well and also work for a loss. It’s insane they play NY, NY for wins and losses

MikeM

"We're expecting big things from Alex in year 2. Just don't have a lane for Jasson, unfortunately" "DJ when healthy is one of the better hitters for average in the AL"

Ben Stewart

I would laugh but I could see that actually happening.

JnX

Good for them for showing fight for uh 10 innings to hold on to some dignity. A toast to the Dodgers, a truly excellent organization that doesn't accept mediocrity or half-measures. Nobody can deny this one. Also, great job by NYY to play New York, New York as the Dodgers celebrate their WS win. Can they find a new fucking song to play for losses?

Nick Fugitt

If the Yankees play clean baseball (or even like 35% less fucking brain dead baseball) they are going to LA up 3-2. This isn’t a series that Aaron Boone can survive, but because we live in the absolute dumbest timeline, he will likely get extended.

The Original Drew

Felt like they were underdogs going in because their poor fundamentals were going to catch up with them eventually.

Cptncha

Thank you, Mike. RAB is as much a part of my love of baseball at this point as the Yankees are during times like this. It makes it sting a little less to read your analysis of this catastrophe and, later on, your plans for how there can be hope for the future. Thank you for helping me love the game even when it's hard to love this team.

Gregory B

Also I’m normally whatever to national broadcasts but woof this entire postseason was awful. How are Smoltz and Costas allowed near a mic?

Dan G

The dumbest inning (and team). Only the 2024 Yankees could rip away the nothing-to-lose and lets-see-what-happens spirit from yesterday and turn it into gut twisting pain.

Mike F.

Can't wait until they resign Rizzo and Verdugo, let Soto walk and say "why pay that much for one player when you can spread it around!"

Ben Stewart

That inning was a clown show. But it made me realize these Yanks didn't deserve to win. That was like watching the White Sox on defense. Dodgers played superior defense and that was the difference in 2 games.

brian m

Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. Worst of all, reinforces Hal’s “get in and anything can happen” mindset.

Dan G

It's right there in front of us

Ben Stewart

I am exhausted watching this team. I live and die with them, and was stupidly getting hopeful for some history, but they showed that they are who they have always been under the Boone regime: Sloppy and undisciplined until the very end. Undeserving of winning the World Series against a team who plays a better all-around game.

Gary D.

5th inning was one of the dumbest innings I’ve ever seen in my life. And that happened in the World Series. Horribly stupid way to lose. Blew a 5-0 lead. You’ve got to be kidding me.

Vismay Pandia

Not what you want

Mike

Man, I would have preferred a Dodgers rout...

Brent Nycz

Good season overall. 8 out of 10. Would watch again (except Games 1 and 5).

brian m

I don’t know if I’ve ever been this sick and disgusted with a Yankee loss. 1995 hurt more, and 2001 was closer in our grasp, but I didn’t feel so GROSS the same way I do about this team. After that error I don’t know how Judge shows his face. What a post season disaster he is. It’s almost funny. Just a disgusting feeling from an extremely unlikable team.

Jingling Baby

Not a World Series championship team. Between the last inning of game 1, and the 5th inning tonight, they gave away the World Series. Goodnight.

MikeD

Mike, you nailed it. And my deepest appreciation for your thoughts and comments this season.

Kevin Parlato

thanks for helping us get through it and soak up as much of it as there was to soak up, Mike. You make baseball better.

Swiggins

The worst inning of baseball I’ve seen as a fan in years. Atrocious and inexcusable. The worst part is this team is basically 2 innings from potentially up 3-2 this series. (Blowing game one and this).
