Thoughts after Game 4 of the 2024 ALCS

When Jon Berti bobbled that ground ball in the ninth inning, I half-expected him to fire it into the stands. That he didn’t means the Yankees are a Team of Destiny, right? I hope so. The Yankees have a 3-1 lead in the ALCS following that nice, normal, definitely didn’t take years off my life 8-6 win in Game 4. They have three chances to win one game to get to the World Series for the first time since 2009.

This is, officially, the deepest an Aaron Boone team has ever gone in the postseason, surpassing the 2019 team that got to within two wins of the pennant. This team is killing me and I hate it, but I also love it. Winning the World Series ain't supposed to be easy and these Yankees sure know how to make it hard on themselves. Anyway, I am going to be very busy tonight and tomorrow, so I need to do a short post for Game 4. Here’s the most important stuff:

It’ll be Carlos Rodón vs. Tanner Bibee in Game 5 on Saturday night (8pm ET on TBS). Cleveland is starting Bibee on short rest after he threw only 1.1 innings and 39 pitches in Game 2. Their bullpen is gassed – so is the Yankees’ bullpen – so grind him down again, and things should be okay. One win away from a pennant, five wins away from a parade.

Lol my dude. Not a snowballs chance in hell the Mets sweep the Yankees.

Kenneth Madden

The fact that you pay money to come here and post this type of nonsense is actually baffling to me.

One of the wildest wins I can remember. The pen is so shaky right now but somehow they got it done. Let's have an easier win today!

John G

Rizzo is a disaster in the field sadly

John G

Yankees aren't getting swept by the Mets

John G

I thought the same thing. Cole is a creature of habit and Boone would be afraid on jeopardising his availability and performance for a potential game 6.

Jerry Donohue

What is going on with Rizzo on D? His play is horrendous.

Mike

I was thinking the same thing while watching last night but then remembered how much a creature of habit he is and thought he would not want to do it.

Mike

Good point! That worked for the Sox in ‘18 and Nats in ‘19!

Jerry Donohue

Just bat Judge and Stanton back to back. This isn’t complex.

Zack

Cole on his throw day was the move.

Zack

Fairly convinced WS will be an NL sweep regardless of which teams make it.

Dan G

This is totally second guessing but wasn’t the best move to bring in Stroman in the bottom of the 6th when they went up 6-2? Then they could have saved Cousins and/or Holmes for tonight?

Jerry Donohue

We just won a playoff game with a Leiter who can't break 80mph with the wind blowing in and Tommy Tightpants basically throwing faux-knuckleballs. Yankees baseball is officially drunk.

Joe

Absolutely. There’s also the factor that using so many relievers is that you’re rolling the 20 sided die every time out and there’s a real chance that for whatever reason the reliever just doesn’t have it that night. Guys have bad outings all the time.

The Original Drew

He’s got to go minimum 6.

It's not that Rizzo is the answer; it's that Chisholm right now is clearly NOT the answer. Rizzo will put up competitive ABs. I'll take a dunker over the SS over what Chisholm is currently (not) giving. Rizzo and Judge are good friends. Let's see if and how Rizzo can protect his friend.

The third-time-through-the-order effect for starting pitchers is real, although the numbers are a bit muddied simply because even when starters are pitching well, they often get pulled. Think: Blake Snell on the Rays. Starters at peak not being allowed to face hitters a third time. Relievers also face a similar impact when hitters see them regularly in a short series. The familiarity that hurts starters third time through also hurts relievers with frequent usage over a short period. I'm not convinced MLB managers fully account for this impact when balancing the usage of their starters vs. relievers. Good game. Exciting series.

MikeD

Big moment for Rodon tomorrow.

W.B. Mason Williams

Totally agree that Jazz isn’t the answer in the cleanup spot. But Rizzo isn’t either. Even his hits are weak bloopers, plus he’s clearly not himself in the field either. Missing that shovel pass from Leiter almost cost us the game. Can anyone else bat fourth?

Bruce

No doubt. MLB has to be happy. The entire postseason has been exciting, and ratings are way up. I care less about that, but it's still good for the health of the game we all love. The only negative: Those Strauss logos on the helmets.

MikeD

As always, blame to moron RS for firing Grady Little in 03. After that, no manager will dare go down in flames with their starter again & risk their job.

Bryan Mayer

The last last two games prove simulation theory, and we are all just extras in some godlike teenager's video game. The evidence is clear, MLB managers don't manage pitching staffs like this, base runners don't wander around like ants only to get tagged out, and back to back homers aren't hit off of closers who never give up even a hit. Then tonight some big guy who was yesterday's hero hits another late game tying homer, BUT NO! Our god like, teenage overload decides that NO, he would give Yankee fans a break and it turns into a camera angle "quirk"! No dudes, we ARE the SIMS buzzing little quarks in some hologram.

Kevin Parlato

Only occurred to me after the game how huge the Mets win was for us. Gives our bullpen three extra days to rest (assuming we don’t blow this suddenly insane series).

William

I forgot how intense these get. Ugh. But I’ll take it!

Art Vandelay

I hear you but this is modern baseball. I’m sure it’s statistically better (even if it’s marginally super thin) to have a bullpen guy come out. Idk, I’m not a fan but blame these “super bullpens”

Art Vandelay

Insane game. I’m honestly getting a little tired of how managers have been treating starters this postseason. I get wanting a quick hook because you don’t want games to get out of hand…but then why is anyone surprised when all these lock down bullpen guys are turning into potatoes in front of our very eyes? Was it really better to have Leiter try and throw two innings than have Gil go past 80 pitches? Maybe I’m just from a different era, but it seems like this lean on your bullpen guys ever single game for 5+ innings (or seemingly 7+ if you’re Cleveland) is just more risky than letting a starter go a little deeper.

MikeM

These games are so tense I want to die. I can’t take it. Omg.

Jingling Baby

WPT, WWT, DI.

Gai Kaufman

Das it.

Tamir

That was the least fun post season win in the 36 years I’ve been on the planet. That being said, Yankees were 1 strike away from a sweep. Let’s fucking finish this tomorrow.
