Thoughts after Game 4 of the 2024 ALCS
Added 2024-10-19 04:14:49 +0000 UTC
When Jon Berti bobbled that ground ball in the ninth inning, I half-expected him to fire it into the stands. That he didn’t means the Yankees are a Team of Destiny, right? I hope so. The Yankees have a 3-1 lead in the ALCS following that nice, normal, definitely didn’t take years off my life 8-6 win in Game 4. They have three chances to win one game to get to the World Series for the first time since 2009.
This is, officially, the deepest an Aaron Boone team has ever gone in the postseason, surpassing the 2019 team that got to within two wins of the pennant. This team is killing me and I hate it, but I also love it. Winning the World Series ain't supposed to be easy and these Yankees sure know how to make it hard on themselves. Anyway, I am going to be very busy tonight and tomorrow, so I need to do a short post for Game 4. Here’s the most important stuff:
We need to start referring to Giancarlo Stanton by his proper name: Giancarlo Fucking Stanton. What a legend October G is. Why did the Guardians pitch to him with a base open in the sixth inning? Beats me, but I’m glad they did. Cade Smith, who has been so good all year, is out of gas. He was sitting 94 mph that inning. He’s usually up around 97-98 mph.
Understandably, there was a lot of talk about the Yankees having to pick themselves up off the mat after that brutal Game 3 loss, then Juan Soto comes out and gives the Yankees a two-run lead two batters into the game. What is the difference between these Yankees and the 2017-23 Yankees? That guy right there. Big game player making big game plays.
I knew one of Alex Verdugo’s weak grounders would come in handy one day. For real though, good job ambushing the first pitch and beating the Guardians at their own game with the weak contact stuff. The bottom of the order did the damn thing in the ninth inning. Anthony Rizzo, Anthony Volpe, and Verdugo all got hits to win the game, as did Gleyber Torres. Straight up refused to lose.
Luis Gil wobbled – 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 3 K – but did not tip over. Two runs in four innings is about as good as it gets for No. 4 starters in the postseason these days, and one of the two runs he gave up was on one of those bloops to shallow left field the Guardians specialize in. What are you supposed to do when a guy puts this pitch in play? All things considered, nice work Luis.

Mark Leiter Jr. went from not being on the roster Thursday to pitching what was essentially the two biggest innings of the season Friday (he replaced the injured Ian Hamilton on the roster), which is not great. This bullpen, man. Clay Holmes is bad again, unfortunately, and I don’t know how Tommy Kahnle got three outs before allowing two runs. He’s thrown 44 pitches the last two games and all 44 were changeups. What a cheeky bastard.
On the bullpen note, I love that Dellin Betances is just a total Yankees fanboy on social media now. Bring him in to throw out the ceremonial first pitch one of these days, Yankees.

Please just put Rizzo in the cleanup spot between Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Jazz Chisholm Jr. has been a complete zero all postseason. You’re just making life easy on Cleveland by sandwiching an easy out between Judge and Stanton. If you must stick a lefty between them, put Rizzo there.
And finally, the World Series will officially begin next Friday. MLB came up with a flexible schedule this year that would have moved Game 1 up to Tuesday if both Championship Series ended in five or fewer games, but that didn’t happen. The Mets beat the Dodgers to force Game 6 earlier in the day Friday. So, if the Yankees handle their business, Game 1 is next Friday.
It’ll be Carlos Rodón vs. Tanner Bibee in Game 5 on Saturday night (8pm ET on TBS). Cleveland is starting Bibee on short rest after he threw only 1.1 innings and 39 pitches in Game 2. Their bullpen is gassed – so is the Yankees’ bullpen – so grind him down again, and things should be okay. One win away from a pennant, five wins away from a parade.

Lol my dude. Not a snowballs chance in hell the Mets sweep the Yankees.

2024-10-19 19:32:27 +0000 UTCOne of the wildest wins I can remember. The pen is so shaky right now but somehow they got it done. Let's have an easier win today!

2024-10-19 18:11:03 +0000 UTCI thought the same thing. Cole is a creature of habit and Boone would be afraid on jeopardising his availability and performance for a potential game 6.

2024-10-19 16:33:58 +0000 UTCWhat is going on with Rizzo on D? His play is horrendous.

2024-10-19 16:33:23 +0000 UTCI was thinking the same thing while watching last night but then remembered how much a creature of habit he is and thought he would not want to do it.

2024-10-19 16:30:45 +0000 UTCGood point! That worked for the Sox in ‘18 and Nats in ‘19!

2024-10-19 15:11:47 +0000 UTCJust bat Judge and Stanton back to back. This isn’t complex.

2024-10-19 15:10:06 +0000 UTCFairly convinced WS will be an NL sweep regardless of which teams make it.

2024-10-19 15:00:43 +0000 UTCThis is totally second guessing but wasn’t the best move to bring in Stroman in the bottom of the 6th when they went up 6-2? Then they could have saved Cousins and/or Holmes for tonight?

2024-10-19 14:42:04 +0000 UTCWe just won a playoff game with a Leiter who can't break 80mph with the wind blowing in and Tommy Tightpants basically throwing faux-knuckleballs. Yankees baseball is officially drunk.

2024-10-19 14:09:08 +0000 UTCAbsolutely. There’s also the factor that using so many relievers is that you’re rolling the 20 sided die every time out and there’s a real chance that for whatever reason the reliever just doesn’t have it that night. Guys have bad outings all the time.

2024-10-19 12:43:42 +0000 UTCHe’s got to go minimum 6.

2024-10-19 12:32:30 +0000 UTCIt's not that Rizzo is the answer; it's that Chisholm right now is clearly NOT the answer. Rizzo will put up competitive ABs. I'll take a dunker over the SS over what Chisholm is currently (not) giving. Rizzo and Judge are good friends. Let's see if and how Rizzo can protect his friend.

2024-10-19 06:48:05 +0000 UTCThe third-time-through-the-order effect for starting pitchers is real, although the numbers are a bit muddied simply because even when starters are pitching well, they often get pulled. Think: Blake Snell on the Rays. Starters at peak not being allowed to face hitters a third time. Relievers also face a similar impact when hitters see them regularly in a short series. The familiarity that hurts starters third time through also hurts relievers with frequent usage over a short period. I'm not convinced MLB managers fully account for this impact when balancing the usage of their starters vs. relievers. Good game. Exciting series.

2024-10-19 06:41:28 +0000 UTCBig moment for Rodon tomorrow.

2024-10-19 05:33:32 +0000 UTCTotally agree that Jazz isn’t the answer in the cleanup spot. But Rizzo isn’t either. Even his hits are weak bloopers, plus he’s clearly not himself in the field either. Missing that shovel pass from Leiter almost cost us the game. Can anyone else bat fourth?
Bruce
2024-10-19 05:22:36 +0000 UTCNo doubt. MLB has to be happy. The entire postseason has been exciting, and ratings are way up. I care less about that, but it's still good for the health of the game we all love. The only negative: Those Strauss logos on the helmets.
MikeD
2024-10-19 05:14:53 +0000 UTCAs always, blame to moron RS for firing Grady Little in 03. After that, no manager will dare go down in flames with their starter again & risk their job.

2024-10-19 05:03:55 +0000 UTCThe last last two games prove simulation theory, and we are all just extras in some godlike teenager's video game. The evidence is clear, MLB managers don't manage pitching staffs like this, base runners don't wander around like ants only to get tagged out, and back to back homers aren't hit off of closers who never give up even a hit. Then tonight some big guy who was yesterday's hero hits another late game tying homer, BUT NO! Our god like, teenage overload decides that NO, he would give Yankee fans a break and it turns into a camera angle "quirk"! No dudes, we ARE the SIMS buzzing little quarks in some hologram.

2024-10-19 04:42:09 +0000 UTCOnly occurred to me after the game how huge the Mets win was for us. Gives our bullpen three extra days to rest (assuming we don’t blow this suddenly insane series).

2024-10-19 04:36:02 +0000 UTCI forgot how intense these get. Ugh. But I’ll take it!

2024-10-19 04:34:37 +0000 UTCI hear you but this is modern baseball. I’m sure it’s statistically better (even if it’s marginally super thin) to have a bullpen guy come out. Idk, I’m not a fan but blame these “super bullpens”
Art Vandelay
2024-10-19 04:34:08 +0000 UTCInsane game. I’m honestly getting a little tired of how managers have been treating starters this postseason. I get wanting a quick hook because you don’t want games to get out of hand…but then why is anyone surprised when all these lock down bullpen guys are turning into potatoes in front of our very eyes? Was it really better to have Leiter try and throw two innings than have Gil go past 80 pitches? Maybe I’m just from a different era, but it seems like this lean on your bullpen guys ever single game for 5+ innings (or seemingly 7+ if you’re Cleveland) is just more risky than letting a starter go a little deeper.

2024-10-19 04:19:55 +0000 UTCThese games are so tense I want to die. I can’t take it. Omg.

2024-10-19 04:17:49 +0000 UTCThat was the least fun post season win in the 36 years I’ve been on the planet. That being said, Yankees were 1 strike away from a sweep. Let’s fucking finish this tomorrow.
