Really quick thoughts after Jazz Chisholm Jr. suffers a UCL injury

Jazz Chisholm Jr. suffered a UCL injury in his left elbow on that play at the plate Monday night (video), Aaron Boone announced Tuesday afternoon. Chisholm is still going through testing to determine the severity and whether surgery is required, but he’s likely going on the injured list. The UCL is, of course, the Tommy John surgery ligament. Just a dumb, fluke, bad luck injury.
I’m sure I’ll have more to say once we get a full diagnosis and treatment plan and all that. Some really quick thoughts on the injury:
First and foremost, losing Chisholm for any length of time would stink. He’s hitting .316/.361/.702 (195 wRC+) with seven homers in 14 games as a Yankee, and has handled third base surprisingly well. His speed and athleticism are a breath of fresh air. Losing Chisholm is a blow. He will be sorely missed.
Even if Jazz needs Tommy John surgery, it is his non-throwing elbow, and he should be ready to go sometime close to next Opening Day. He might even be ready for Opening Day. Losing him for the rest of this season would be really bad, but this is not like a pitcher blowing out his elbow.
I think the Yankees can use Chisholm’s injured list stint to recall Will Warren for Wednesday’s spot start, which is necessary because of Saturday’s doubleheader. Warren is still in the 15-day waiting period and the injured list stint gets around that. (I say I think because you might have to replace a pitcher with a pitcher and a position player with a position player with these newfangled roster rules. Not sure.)
If Warren for Chisholm is possible, a pitcher would have to go to make room for a position player to get the Yankees back down to the maximum 13 pitchers. Chisholm to the injured list, Enyel De Los Santos DFA, Warren and a position player (Oswald Peraza?) up could be the moves. We’ll see.
The Yankees are absolutely cursed at the trade deadline. Good grief.
It usually takes a few days to get the full diagnosis with ligament injuries, especially when the player understandably wants a second opinion before having major surgery. We may not know the full extent until this weekend or even early next week. Regardless, what a colossal bummer. The vibes, they are wretched.

2024-08-14 13:28:43 +0000 UTCOn the bright side of Yankees Universe, good to see Burdi and Effross each pitch a scoreless inning yesterday, and Trevino played a rehab game. Peraza and The Martian each had a hit as well. (and maybe Berti will start playing next week). So they could potentially be on the radar if needed. But let's hope Jazz is okay and can play out the season!

2024-08-13 23:57:12 +0000 UTCThis feels like such an echo from 2023 - fun, young addition to team has positive August impact on and off the pitch then injures UCL

2024-08-13 22:48:26 +0000 UTCWhy can’t we have nice things!? Finally, the yanks get a fun young athletic player and gets injured. Even in the best case scenario I can see this being a blow. Ughhhhhhhh
