Hey patrons! ... and here are the 'weekly news' n°3 with , as a main picture, details about my new workflow to produce artworks (as I promised). So, what's new? #Painting / Speed-painting style : I trained hard this month to speed-up my digital-painting skill. So, now I'm able to get back to a rendering I wanted for Pepper&Carrot since origin : PAINTING ( eg. episode 1 "Potion of Flight" ). The screenshot I shared on Monday had amazing feedback, and I feel more comfortable with this new Technic. Episode 1 with the 'speed-painting style" took me a long long time to produce, and after this experience I abandoned this Technic. It was too long and I wanted to tell longer stories ! Then I started to focus on finding faster workflow. I adopted the line-art+coloring classic workflow for all the 'Potion challenge" series ( ep03, ep04 and ep06 ). 99% of comic-artists use this style, it's fast ; but I was always not really happy with the end result. Practicing 'line-art' since last summer and optimizing color workflow ( thanks to Krita and Gmic developers ) contributed a lot to develop my actual skill. When I tested the painting rendering again for Pepper&Carrot, I was two time faster ! A good surprise. Painting rendering is still slightly slower than regular line-art+color... but much more rewarding for quality ; I feel my result is more near to what I had in mind . I'm also happy to see my comic style starting to get an harmony with my portfolio of illustrator/concept-artist. # Character design update : This month I received a critic : 'not enough moe' . I didn't knew what's 'moe' means , but thanks Wikipedia I found out : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moe_%28slang%29 ( in short: Japanese slang for cute/adorable ). After a review of my last character designs, I thought this critic was right. I decided to focus a bit more on making the comic also looking really positive, cute and adorable. Pepper appears now a bit younger than in ep03, ep04 and ep06, but older than in episode 1. Maybe I found the right setting? Future will tell. :) # Translations status : Dovaa and TheFaico completed the Spanish translation at 100% : website + all comics ! Congrats! Also, future episode 07 version 'colored-sketch' was released on Monday for all translator team. The repo is here ( spoiler alert ! ) : https://github.com/Deevad/peppercarrot_ep07_translation Translations already done for being in time for release : Dutch : Willem Sonke English : Alex Gryson French : David Revoy, Aurélien Gâteau Russian : Denis "uncle Night" Prisukhin and soon Italian ! ( I just receive the Archive, thanks Antonio Parisi ) and Japanese soon thanks Guruguru :) I am continually blown away with everything you are doing to help this project to move forward ; support , contributions, etc. Episode 07 soon ! Thanks for your support!

Thanks for the detailed explanation! Indeed, you keep the flexibility of tweaking proportions until the very end which is nice. I'll give both workflows a try. Regarding 'speedpainting': I always found the sketches of Levente Peterffy highly 'effective' in carrying all the mood of a piece in seemingly rough and scarce brushstrokes and patterns. Maybe this can serve as a source for inspiration for you? http://www.artoflevi.com/?page_id=1674

:-) Hey Andrej, yes : I don't use G'mic for filling zones with the 'colorize[interactive]' filter now. My actual workflow for Pepper&Carrot is now really similar in many point to the one I wrote in this old tutorial : http://www.davidrevoy.com/article129/tutorial-pencil-to-digital-painting ; exept I start sketching directly in Krita ( not from a scanned real life sketch ) and I detail directly in Krita too. I fill the zone with a method similar than 'C- Main color feed canvas' described in the link ; with airbrushes and blending mode, I do the digital DJ of color. I can reduce the amount of 'milestone' this way. I have now 3 : [ Sketching / Colored Sketch / Final ] ; the old one was heavier [ Sketching / Line-art / Flat-colors / Final ] but easier to get the same level of quality across all the panels. What I like with my 'new' method is the possibility to tweak proportions, deform eyes or volumes even at the end of the process. So, I can do dramatic corrections even at the very end. It was more difficult to do with a line-art without loosing quality and with many layers ( lines+color under ) it was less flexible. The big downside : time ; even if I paint faster than before doing full shading and painting is still a bit more time consuming. I must work on simplifying my stroke to something more efficient, my ideal is a sort of 'speedpainting' looking like final :-)

Hi David, thank you for sharing your experience with different workflows! I have a question regarding your current approach. Do you still make use of Gmic to define colour regions in one of the steps, for example in 'C: Paint (on top)'?

Oh good ! I'm happy you likes the 'how-to' merged with mini weekly pictures. I was a bit hesitant to post this making-of/technical things here. About doing videos, sure ! I have a youtube channel ; https://www.youtube.com/user/DeevadRevoy/videos I'll keep posting on it. Do you have a particular topic, or question about my way to draw/paint ? ( I'm always looking for good/helpful tutorial topic ). Thank for the support!

Thank you BS for your comments ; especially for the "don't limit yourself to one or the other. " It's really wise. I'll probably keep balancing from one side to another depending the nature of the story and the mood I'm looking for. I'll take care to not build too much confusion to the audience. Thanks for the support!

Hey Jónatan, thank you for the feedback. Now the episode 07 'The Wish' is online ; you probably noticed the wood/forest painting. I *really* had pleasure painting nature last month :o) ( I still need to fix the speedpainting I made for you , on to-do list !) Yes, 'The potion challenge" ep03, ep04 and ep06 were more adult and different. On many aspect ( storytelling, panel way to cut scene, amount of text, length ). Please don't be shy on the comment, if you have a feeling or critic. All comments helps me to get a better 'mind-map' of how Pepper&Carrot works, and this mind-map shapes my emotions, feelings and inspiration. I'm pretty sure there is a sort of communication process happening subconsciously under this, and I'm happy to reply with colors and paintings !

I love when you post these to show your process it is a great way for us to observe what is working for you. These postings also allow me to choose methods of making creations of my own as well. Thanks so much and keep up the great work! I am looking forward to future releases. It would be interesting to be able to watch you work as well. Have you ever considered posting videos of your process as you work? Just a thought.

I find that maturity implies a level of experience/wisdom which speaks well to the confidence she displays throughout the potion challenge whereas a more youthful look shows more of a wide-eyed, curious, playful personality. Both match up with her well and I would say don't limit yourself to one or the other. Of course hold consistency across a story line but so far this comic series appears to be loosely coupled (one page not requiring you to have seen every previous one in order to understand and appreciate it) with minor exception to the potion challenge. I would say feel free to use whichever is more appropriate for the current story arc however there is the worry of causing audience confusion by doing that. There's my thought. I look forward to seeing both cute and witty character traits.

I have to agree that I also found the art style missing a little bit in moe. I fell in love with the character in episode 01 and 02. I was slightly dissapointed with the more adult-look and less childish/innocent cute flair it had in the earlier episodes. I decided it was part of natural progression for a series maturing from simple sketches to full-blown series. I'm to shy to force my own opinion onto others but I'm glad someone did and you agree. I'm absolutely loving her design in (B) Colored Scetch above. It's a lot more moe which made me fall in love with you from beginning :) Can't wait to see future episodes adopted in this style :D
