But I loved it.
It reminded me of way back in the day when I first started using Linux. Back when you didn't know if an update was going to hose your system. Or if installing the Nvidia drivers would leave you at a blinking cursor.
I'm being serious here - those times were frustrating but I learned a lot by having to debug my systems. I was able to use my knowledge later in my career, specifically at Shiftwise, which I talked about extensively in my Podcast interview.
Sparky is based on Debian Testing so it is super fresh. A bit too fresh perhaps - Nvidia drivers don't play nice with it. I don't blame Sparky or Debian for that though.
APTus is a really cool and strange tool, very similar to the MX tool suite. It has curated apps as well as a ton of interesting utilities. It felt like a discount version of YaST but not in a bad way.
It goes without saying that Sparky could use a lot of TLC if it ever broke into the mainstream. The styling on the MATE version was fantastic but I managed to break it twice which was a major bummer.
Given that SparkyLinux is a relatively small community, I don't see it taking off anytime soon. But I look forward to revisiting it later on down the road!
I hope you all enjoyed this inside piece about Distro Delves episode 10.
Fun Fact: I wrote this post before recording the voice over for the episode.
