Robert Altman: America's Rebel Director (early access)

Robert Altman embodied the spirit of America, both in his films and in life. This is the story of his career.

Enjoy this early access! I also wanted to ask you all what you think the title of this video should be? At the moment I'm stuck between:

Robert Altman: America's Rebel Director

OR

America's Rebel Director

Not sure if the omission of his name would be a good or bad thing for people who don't know who he is! Lmk your thoughts! xx

1) I'd go with the 1st title 2) McCabe & Mrs. Miller is literally my fav movie of all time. I genuinely love everything about it. Ironically as a ND on the spectrum I found the sound mixing to be a pretty accurate audio-visual representation of me in crowded bars lol. But in an actual serious note about this movie and McCabe- I actually like to interpret him as a ND. I'll explain: so besides me excusing the sound mixing choice to be McCabe's audio-visual POV, I wanna talk about Masking in this movie. I assume you heard about this term, but masking is a custom that a lot of autistic ppl do in order to fit as close as possible to NT society standards both consciously and inconciously which for me I'd say is basically hiding any trace of anxiety and and incompetence from the outside- it's always to try to show myself calm and happy. So when it comes to McCabe, my interpretation of this character is that he as a possible ND with his own inner struggles because of the time period never really got a proper direction as a child on how to really reconcile with well just existing as a human. I think that the famous "I've got poetry in me" scene is a pretty good indication that he tends to talk to himself pretty often as a result of never really having ppl around to talk to throughout his life. So since a genuine human connection was always missing from his life, he just saw the American Dream of being an independent successful businessman as his solace. This is not to diminish McCabe's hubris of course, yes he turned down the deal because he was an idiot and thought he had it under control. But also that's what he thinks the general masculine "confident" NT man would do in his situation and yeah he'd not be the only idiot to act like they have the upper hand. And McCabe is not the only one performing, it's clearly Mrs. Miller performing as well from having to act as a businesswoman with McCabe and clients, to then switch to a guiding "mother" taking care of her employees. But never showing to anyone her vulnerable self- we the audience, are the only ones who know about her Opium addiction. My point is that I always saw this movie not as a general critique on capitalism and the American Dream but that it does that through the lens of performance in a neo-liberal society and the toll it takes- you can never really show your true vulnerable self to anybody (and I guess in this movie's case drink Whishy with raw eggs instead of eating a normal dinner lmao). 3) As an Altman sucker, I really enjoyed this video. I totally geeked out when you mentioned Brewster Mccloud and Buffalo. I actually didn't know at all about that bombing staff he did in the army and that's definitely new info that's going to stick with me. 4) I think he said once that he considers the movie Kansas City to be really personal to him because it was about his childhood. Curious to know if you've seen it. 5) Every time you mentioned Altman being a womanizer I kept being reminded of that anecdote from the You Must Remember This podcast about the time Polly Platt rejected his ass after he tried flirting with her lol.
