In reality of course, these were vacuous speculation from Elon Musk almost 10 years ago that his fans think is actually a real plan that Musk first of all created out of his sheer genius, and just has sitting in a draw somewhere in his office. This is actually a worse idea than the hyperloop!- even according to Musks back of an envelope calculations. He says he needs the plane to be 70+ % cell, at which point this is not a plane, it’s a flying battery. He then needs the battery to have twice the energy density of the commercial batteries he is currently using in his cars. This all sound good and well until you realize that the energy density of Elon Musks batteries really haven’t significantly changed in over a decade!
This is before you get onto the technical challenges of supersonic flight. The only slight advantage that electric motors have here is they don’t need air to burn fuel to generate thrust. But they still need air to generate thrust!
The sad thing is even the electric jets are a sane plan compared to his idea to use rockets to replace planes!... and his fans are even more giddy about that than the electric jets :-/
