Resuming the Demon's Souls Compare-Through, Already Made a Discovery
Added 2023-02-08 21:47:42 +0000 UTCSo I'm finally returning to the compare-through, and I've already made a discovery that's new to me. Maybe someone has seen this before, but I've run it by a couple people deep into Demon's Souls datamining and it just seems to be easy to miss, it's new to all of us so far. This is perhaps due in part to the map viewer being very noisy with a lot of overlapping junk in this spot.
In Stonefang 2-1, you have this gear mechanism that has a bunch of minecarts on it, running on a loop. It's just off to your right behind the gated door that you need to pull the lever to open:

If you could go down there and follow the minecarts on the bottom side of this loop, there's a hallway for them to pass through. It's not too surprising that they made a clearing for the carts (even though they could've just as easily clipped through a wall when down and out of your line of sight), but it does open up into a wider room with an unused staircase hallway attached to it.
Here's a video showing what it looks like and where it dead ends.

I'm not expecting to find a ton of new stuff like this. Between the map viewer, other people having had access to the newer freecam tool, and also me previously having had a semi-restricted ability to travel freely out of bounds, I don't think there's much else hiding. Also with the nature of Demon's Souls' design -- not having an interconnected world -- the level design seems to be a lot more cohesive with less unused dead ends. But nonetheless this was a great start to playing around with freecam in Stonefang!

these carts definitely appear to be designed to scoop and carry the player elsewhere; lightmaps seem to be baked-in where needed already, too. might've been scrapped late in development? definitely interesting
