Hey Patrons! In this weekly I’m showing off some spritework experiments that I previous shared in some Shattered Secrets posts earlier last year.

Spritework Experiments

After I posted ‘Shattered Pixel Dungeon in 2023’ I got a few contacts from Pixel Artists, and two of them did produce some art while experimenting and doing concepting for how redesigned sprites may look. Unfortunately, I am not currently actively working with anyone on new pixel art, but the concepts were very helpful in exploring how new in game art might look.

Given that I’m about to release ‘Shattered Pixel Dungeon in 2024’, I’m thinking about possible spritework improvements again, and so thought it was a good idea to share these concepts again to get a bit more feedback. Who knows, maybe this is something that I’ll be able to pick back up in 2024.

Firstly, both artists did some experiments with the hero sprites (pre-duelist), one artist on the left, another on the right:

Each also did some experiments with item sprites. Here’s the first picture:

Lastly, one of the artists also did some experiments with changing up environment art! Firstly, here’s a little study on changing walls (old on right, new on left):

..and a bigger image showcasing a bunch of possible adjustments and additions to a typical sewer level:

I want to emphasize again that I’m unfortunately not currently doing anything with these concepts, but I still think they are extremely useful for figuring out what sort of changed art works well for the game, and what might clash with the existing style a bit too much.

That's correct, the halls also has one fewer regular enemy at the moment.

Isn't there just one exotic enemy in the Halls (the caustic scorpio)?

This is one of the reasons why I got multiple examples for things like item and character sprites. Obviously changing the art is a change no matter what, but I would like to not change the game's existing art style. Rather I'd prefer to keep the style similar, but execute on it better.

You asked about v2.3.0 last week. If I had any new information to share about it I would.

I really like the modified spellbook and I could imagine it as a new item or a "stronger version" of existing spell book. Maybe as the book is filled with pages it changes shape with similar progression like other artifacts and this being the final stage? And the fountain decoration is also pretty nice and I could imagine Well of Health looking such way. The water would disappear after drinking. Surely the modified art looks interesting but would change the esthetic of the game which is a difficult thing to do right. But it would not be the first time. The 2.5D redesign of floors comes to mind.

The old version of the Sprite is good, but I think it's much more advanced compared to the new version. And may I ask when the 2.3.0 version will be officially released?
