Huntress’ Backstory | Patreon Weekly #220

Huntress’ Backstory

Above the dungeon there is a bustling city, the capital of a large kingdom. The rulers of this kingdom claim to be blessed to rule by the gods, and there is some truth to that statement. They are a family of powerful empaths, gifted with the ability to feel the emotions and sometimes thoughts of others, and even channel them into powerful divine magic. Many years ago, this royal family had a prince and princess, but now it only has a prince.

The princess hated the life she was born into. She hated being being second to her spoiled younger brother, she hated that her empathic powers weren’t developing properly, and she hated seeing the way her father so willingly used his gifts to further his own selfish agenda. As a coming of age ritual, she was meant to attempt a spiritual commune with the people of the kingdom, but the thought of it turned her stomach. So, on the night before the ritual she packed her things and fled into the forest surrounding the city.

As she spent time in the silence of the wilderness, she began to realize that her empathic gift worked a bit differently. While she had a limited ability to connect to people, she had a tremendous ability to commune with the fauna and flora of the forest. The forest began to speak to her in a sense, driving her toward a grove that no human had seen for countless years.

The chorus of ancient voices she heard in her head were quite unlike those of a human, but they made far more sense to the princess. The voices were delighted to find an outsider who could understand them, and she became welcome in this new court. Over time she learned to navigate the wilds better than any human, plant, or animal. On her first birthday in her new home, she was gifted a magical bow that had been grown for her, imbued with the spiritual energy of the deep forest. She became a guardian of the forest, a Huntress who kept interlopers out of the wilds, by force if necessary.

However, as time passed a new threat began to emerge that was much greater than any interloper. The Huntress enters the dungeon after more than a decade away from the city, to protect her forest domain and the greater world from the growing evil below. The years have softened her disgust toward her former life, but she is still terrified of confronting the people she left behind.
