Dune (2021) * FULL LENGTH REACTION

It's time for more sci-fi!!

I love a new universe, and Denis Villeneuve is amazing since he did Arrival, PLUS HANS ZIMMER?!

😍😍😍😍😍

Super excited for the next one, and I am obviously going to have to read the books too 😅

For this style of reaction, you need your own copy to watch the movie.  Also know there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

I am so interested in this universe!!

That's actually really awesome! I know 3D modelling can be quite hard, so having someone else do it is always a bonus lol

No Spoilers: Paul is special not just because he is Jessica's son and was taught the Bene Gesserit techniques, but because he showed talent in many fields and was tutored in all of them by the best practitioners of each in the Empire: Mentat logic and calculation by Thufir Hawat; personal combat by the Ginaz Swordmaster Duncan Idaho; strategy and tactics by Gurney Haleck; and leadership and politics by Duke Leto. At the end of the movie we see him getting in position to learn from the Fremen. He has lots of tools in his toolbox.

Not sure if you are interested in this kind of thing, but as a gamer maybe you are: SkullForge Studio has a line of STL files for 3D printing 32mm figures (SW Legion scale) based on this version of Dune. The troops packs have a bunch of poses, while the characters have a couple poses each. A couple of examples: "Quartermaster Garrus" https://skullforgestudios.gumroad.com/l/rqoev?layout=profile "Ravage Harbinger" https://skullforgestudios.gumroad.com/l/acaqc?layout=profile "Imperial Janissaries" https://skullforgestudios.gumroad.com/l/dbvsu?layout=profile and the "Authority Grand Duke" (from That Other Franchise) https://skullforgestudios.gumroad.com/l/TtVRG?layout=profile

JAKH

Part of the similarity between "Dune" and "Star Wars" is that both Frank Herbert and George Lucas have said that they were fans of the Barsoom novels written by Edger Rice Burroughs, so it makes sense that they would both move in similar directions for their own creations.

JAKH

The shipboard heavy beam weapons in "Babylon 5" aren't bad either.

There are 2 previous adaptions not just 1; a theater release in 1984 (the alternate extended version is better) and a made-for TV Sci-Fi Channel 3-part miniseries in 2000. There is a follow-up miniseries from 2003 which covers the second and third books. The mini-series is most faithful to the books so far, but these new ones have the advantage of a bigger budget for multiple talented actors and 20 years of FX improvement.

I think if they keep everything from the books, it would make for a movie that is a flop. There would be way too much information and people would just get bored lol I'm perfectly fine with leaving out information and if people want to look it up afterwards, they can :D I usually always avoid trailers, never really thought to react to them 🤔

Verowak

Good points, 100% agree. Judging from other stuff in the movie, they skipped a lot, but never went against the lore. I absolutely love the first scene with Thufir, where he does weird things with his eyes, calculates something very quickly and immediately everyone thinks: "oh, this guy has math superpowers", no explanation need. Of course I'd prefer if the whole lore was included (still might be in the next movie), but that's the next best thing you could do.

I actually buy the discomfort with the ship laser more than the handheld scene, as much as I love the look (the absolute best in sci-fi representation of intimidating lasers I’ve seen). It makes sense for them to use such a powerful instant hit weapon if they see a shield go down, but the costs of a mistake are total loss of much of the city and or a huge ship asset so I can’t really argue that it’s at least debatable it would be worth it. The hand cannon though… this is faithful to the death Sardukar pursuing the most important target left on the planet, I don’t think they would hesitate to roll the dice on a shield being active. Win win for them really, a “nuclear” explosion would accomplish their mission quite effectively ending a dynasty that’s as dangerous to the emperor as the Harkonen at a cost of a couple squads of troops.

I'm a long time fan of the books, and I absolutely love this adaptation. It leaves out a LOT of the intricacies of the plot, characters and worldbuilding , but in my opinion this was necessary to film it at all, they did an amazing job of simplifying it, but retaining the atmosphere. If you have some time Vero, you could react to Part 2 trailers, they're mind-blowing.

snthd

I tend to think the same, I’ll assume it’s still there until proven otherwise with a shield being hit by a laser or a statement from the filmmakers. I just know there is disagreement. And we technically don’t know for sure if the movie is keeping the interaction since nothing gets specifically stated so I went with a more basic “it’s complicated” to avoid ending up with a long rambling post, haha.

RocktSurgeon

RocktSurgeon: regarding lasers - if you rewatch the scene with the powerful laser hunting Duncan, he's actually attacked with missiles first, you can briefly seen his shield getting knocked down and only then they try to shoot it down with the laser. In the scene where the small laser cuts through the door, they've been more reckless with it, maybe they didn't care? Anyway, I agree I love these lasers, too, how they look and especially: how they sound.

Adaptations are always difficult. If there are too many details, it can turn people away, if there are not enough, then original fans may not be happy. I'm just along for the ride to see what the creative team has come up with 🤩

Verowak

The novel will be really nice to read! I love getting more information after having seen the movie lol

Verowak

It's so nice when others come up with the same joke!!! 🤩

Verowak

A trilogy will be nice! I remember hearing that the Dune books sort of fall off after a bit, I didn't know it was so quickly lol. It being sci-fi, having similar terms, make Star Wars an obvious choice for similarities. From the one movie, I 100% would not be comparing it to Game of Thrones over Star Wars 😂

Verowak

I knew my subscription money was well spent when Vero and I made the same “blood, sweat and tears” joke during this movie.

Basically anything that seems like magic is not, as written. It's some form of technology, or understanding of psychology and human behavior (to some extent the voice)/medicine (Dr Yueh's touch exams)/physics etc that is 10s of thousands of years beyond our understanding. Quoting Arthur C Clarke- "Any Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." The Baron Harkonen has a belt that lets him over in the books, it seems to be the implants on his spine in the film. Relatedly the Voice/Bene Gesserit abilities are far less like 'magic' than the Force is, they wouldn't work like that on a large scale. Jessica was the Concubine of Paul's father for political reasons. He didn't marry her because that allowed the theoretical possibility of a political marriage to another great house if needed, but they did truly care about each other. Projectile weapons are... sortof handwaved away with shield technology. They are very rare, the darts only work at short range and only because they slow down before the shield so they can get through (shields allow slow moving things through, stop fast moving). Lasers... are more complicated. In the books, they interact very violently with shields- if one hits a shield, it is indistinguishable from a nuclear explosion destroying both target and attacker. The lasers being in the movie are... a bit controversial since it seems to ignore that, so we don't know if that's been written out of the movies. That said, I LOVE how they make the lasers look. They are hands down the most powerful I've seen laser weapons look. Yueh never expected his wife to be freed alive, he knew what the Baron was. He was buying her 'freedom' from endless torture. Last- be careful about considering anyone in power 'good' in this world though of course some are kinder than others. It's a feudal society with even the kindest of lords still ruling over a peasant class. Why would it be bad for Kyne's to say things that would start war on a galactic scale? That would mean tens of trillions of uninvolved innocent people dead. Trying to do good does not always equate to good ends. Frank Herbert said in 1979, "The bottom line of the Dune trilogy is: beware of heroes. Much better [to] rely on your own judgment, and your own mistakes."

RocktSurgeon

Yeah, the whole eugenics thing is... also something that is a much messier topic now than it was when written.

RocktSurgeon

Arrival is a masterpiece, very unique film.

RocktSurgeon

This is planned to be a trilogy, with part 1 and 2 covering the first book and part 3 covering the second book in the series (which starts to get significantly... weirder...) Just a few general things that might add to what you get from the second movie since it's coming so soon- nothing major, just some things you questioned during the movie that help to have just a tiny bit of context that's hard to get across in a film. The biggest thing is Dune influenced almost all scifi and even some fantasy that came after it, but be careful about making assumptions about it based on similarities to Star Wars for instance. Thematically it's got more in common with Game of Thrones.

RocktSurgeon

The one thing this lacked was some little details. The benegeserit eugenics program for example, they they just didn't go deep enough and it leaves non readers a bit confused on the details regarding their plan, what Paul is, how the world as a whole works (no computers) Definately worth going to the books when you're done. All in all it's a great adaptation especially visually speaking.

I'm so excited for this, Vero! As many have said, the 1965 novel _Dune_ is to science fiction what _The Lord of the Rings_ is to fantasy: the master work against which all others are judged. Frank Herbert crafted a rich, multi-layered story in which multiple factions compete for power in a universe with a detailed, ten-thousand-year history. You must read the original novel to really *get* the story!
