Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022) | FULL LENGTH REACTION

Happy Wednesday everyone!!

I've finally gotten around to watching this and it was just simply amazing!!

If you haven't seen it yet, now is your chance, because it is a must watch, for sure.  The actors were all absolutely amazing and perfect for their roles, and now I much watch more of their movies lol

I will say, Waymond is my favorite character though, he's just so sweet and kind and caring.  I love the complete shift when he's Alpha Waymond, too!

It's a movie that would be great to watch for the first time again, just need to somehow forget it first.

The absurd elements were a bit off-putting at times, but at the same time, it fit together so well 🤔

Update on the Patreon poll, it looks like WALL-E is winning by a landslide!

A lot of Patreon uploads this week, keep an eye out for an extra movie: Quantumania!!!

Reminder that you need your own copy of the movie to watchalong, and that there is an extension that allows you to do Picture-in-Picture in case you are interested: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/picture-in-picture-extens/hkgfoiooedgoejojocmhlaklaeopbecg?hl=en

Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022) | FULL LENGTH REACTION

Comments

Thank you for the list! I haven't heard of a lot of the ones in your top 15, so it could be fun to randomly pick one and see what it's all about :D The message in this movie is so good, and so many people will feel like they've been through similar experiences as one character or another. I think it's fantastic that they incorporated so many absurd elements while still having such a heartwarming/heartbreaking story and characters. I get what you mean with it being The Matrix for millennials lol!! I love the concept in this one being parallel universes/multiverse, since I love the "What if" scenarios (especially the hot dog finger one 🤣). Thank you for the info that one of the worlds is inspired by another filmmaker, and that his style was used for it. This is something that I have 0 clue about, I don't really know filmmakers' styles so pointing this out is super neat :) Hong Kong cinema could be neat to try out, though I have no idea what to expect lol

Oh and one more thing I forgot to mention, the universe where Evelyn and Waymond didn’t get together and were both very successful, is inspired by the films of one of my favourite filmmakers, Wong Kar-Wai (most specifically In the Mood For Love). That’s why the framerate goes kinda weird in some of those scenes, as they used one of his most recognisable stylistic flourishes called step-printing. I highly recommend his filmography if you ever wanna get into Hong Kong cinema, especially the aforementioned ITMFL, its sequel 2046, and Chungking Express. He does have one American film, My Blueberry Nights, but it’s probably his least-celebrated film (I still adore it), and it’s better to watch when you’re more familiar with his style.

Just revisited this for the first time in a couple years, along with your reaction. A very fun and sweet film, with a simple and universal message, uniquely and effectively told. I appreciate how all the sincere elements are still couched within absurd/stupid jokes, and how effectively doing something silly gives you superpowers, which reinforces the main theme of the film and the way Evelyn is annoyed with Waymond putting googley eyes on everything, until she “sees the matrix” and puts googley eyes on everything herself. Speaking of The Matrix, I think it’s interesting that you watched this before you saw that film, as I don’t think I’ve seen another film more directly-inspired by The Matrix than this one. I was even recently telling my brother about this movie and I described it as The Matrix for millennials. As for my favourite A24 films, I admit it’s a little pet-peeve of mine when people talk about A24 as if they have their own style, as they’re just a distribution/production company that released all kinds of films, but I think they do at least consistently release high-quality films. In response to your prompt at the end I kind of went overboard and made a (very rough) ranked list of every A24 movie I’ve seen over on Letterboxd, and it turns out I would highly recommend a lot of them! The top 15 or so I’d say are all a must-watch, but it’s not until mid-30s that they get a little hit or miss. Here’s the list if you want to take a look: https://boxd.it/zRnkg$x5yZJlwPYmcotJq4

I'll have to give it a listen, thank you! Their use of the multiverse was so great, and expanded on what I always want it to be. Being able to tap into the powers/abilities/skills of other yous is such a great concept. There are many great movies that are made on a shoestring budget that end up being simply amazing due to the passion and creativity of those working on it. It's very refreshing to see movies like this that aren't just hollywood blockbuster budgets that are insane and feel cheap. I hope you enjoy the full movie reaction!!!

Physicist Sean Carroll has The Daniel’s, creators of this movie, as guests on his MindscapePodcast.com episode #193. Well worth a listen! The fact that this was a multiverse movie for me was spoiled before I watched it, and it worked out great! I very much dislike the brainless way popular movies make use of the multiverse concept so I was expecting to be disappointed. EEAAO handled it wonderfully, and then did everything else wonderfully to become one of my favorite movies. They know how to speak the language of meaning, and their comfort with that language allowed them to be casual and have so much fun with movie in ways that not only didn’t hurt the power and depth of the movie but even enhanced it. I don’t know if others have mentioned it, but this movie was done on a complete shoestring budget, substituting creativity and passion in the place of buearacratic overspending overkill. I see that I watched your reaction 11 months ago on youtube, but as a new Patreon member here I’m looking forward to rewatching it in full movie mode, and experiencing the movie anew.

I learned a lot from your comment!! Really fascinating stuff. I've known about parallel universes and multiverse, and love thinking about it, but never looked into it scientifically. I probably should. Hitchhiker's guide is a movie I need to watch (and also read the book), it's always recommended. I do like how movies are showing the multiverse more and more, it's always interesting to see how it's shown and what happens with it. Like Marvel dealing with the multiverse so much, it's just fun to see where they take it! And EEAAO, deals with it differently, which was really neat to see

Verowak

Oh that is really not cool! Why people would mention that it has anything to do with the multiverse is beyond me. That's a massive spoiler. A lot of people don't realize that expectation spoilers can ruin the experience too. They think "Oh I'm just hyping them up, I'm not spoiling anything" but it really does. If I had to tell someone about this movie, it would be that "it makes you think" and to not look up anything about the movie before watching it.

Verowak

Could not agree more! This movie really uses the multiverse concept well. That's the amazing part about parallel universes: one small change can have a huge impact on your life. It's great that we see many different possibilities (some serious, and some light hearted or funny), and like you said, every decision we make, we often think of "what if I had done this instead". The Marvel movies definitely have less of an introspective take for sure. It was really great to have the cross-over in "No Way Home" though, because we did get to see their similarities and how different things affected them. But Marvel movies and A24 movies are made VERY differently, but both using the multiverse premise in different, yet interesting ways. Marvel doesn't have many serious aspects anymore. It feels like a lot of it is comedic or excitement for excitement sake, so them going back in time would really not be great imo. I mean, it could be fun, but it wouldn't be a standout style that's for sure 🤣

Reflecting on a point mentioned above: I think in comparison to the recent spate of multi-verse movies, a case can be made that "Everything Everywhere" is the "best." (Though obviously taste is subjective.) By this I mean that it seems to be the only one that actually explores the premise. It has a central character who we identify with. Most importantly, the multiverse is used to make us think about shared human concerns and our own lives. We're prompted to wonder about the path not taken, self-determination vs. destiny, does anything we do really matter, and the potential we all have as people. These are things we all grapple with. Conversely, most other recent multi-verse movies are "multiverse" in name only. They don't really explore any of those relatable themes, and just use the premise as a way of doing big cross-over events, having cameos and fan service. "Spiderman, No Way Home" and "Doctor Strange 2" don't really make us think about our own lives. It's just fun and cool to see our favorite icons on the big screen again, interacting with each other. They don't go any deeper than that. I'm not saying that makes them bad movies, just that they're not the best *multiverse* movies. They don't use the multiverse premise itself in an emotionally relatable way. I liken it to time travel movies. Most classic time travel stories, such as "Back to the Future," deal with provocative paradoxes. And they deal with the ramifications of our actions. And they make us wonder if we could change the past, would we? All that philosophical stuff. That's kind of how "Everything Everywhere" is utilizing the multiverse premise. But if "No Way Home" (or similar movies) were about time travel instead of the multiverse, they'd likely just consist of newer pop-culture characters (new Barbie?) going back in time so they could interact with past popular pop-culture icons, like the 80's "Ghostbusters," or Jack and Rose from "Titanic."

you can see the potential mismatch of ideas there. Countless movies and shows drops a reference to "Hugh Everett many-worlds theory" and it's always fun how they word it. An article in 2008 says "after being scorned about his theory of multiple universes, Hugh Everett abandoned academics..." Let's look further... it says "the theory of parallel universes was originated by US physicist Hugh Everett in the late 1950s which envision our universe that branches out to parallel universes moment by moment without intersecting or communicating..." Sean Carroll and the Copenhagen interpretation... "in simple terms it explains that a quantum particle does not exist in one state or another but in all of its possible states at the same time." When so-called measurement is done it collapses into the one reality state... But a strict interpretation of this is that every time a quantum particle "interacts, the universal wave function splits" and each of the different possible results create its own universe, we only see one state because that's the universe we're in. The other states are in and create the multiverse. Not spoilers but these shows mention "the many-worlds Hugh Everett" theory, sometimes a side-character will show depth by dropping the name Hugh Everett, Steins Gate - yes, do you think they name-drop? Your Name - oh yeah it's always fun catching this name-drop Fringe - it would be hard to research every script in the series but I wouldn't put it past them, seriously (many other titles left out) "The concept of the multiverse was first brought up in 1895 between Boltzmann and Zermelo" wow Boltzmann now there's a name-drop. I think these ideas were in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams which was a 1978 radio comedy... I might have heard the tapes of this radio show... or maybe it was a later dramatization, not sure. Everyone has read the book, I don't think I have but I've heard the audio version and seen the BBC series. Anyone who's into technology knows about the book and its search for meaning in a quantum world, lol I made that up. Quantum theory itself originated in the 1900s. Then later by 1935 Einstein had split off from quantum mechanics. In the recent movie Oppenheimer we see Einstein and a few big names in physics... The multiverse in pop culture? This is interesting the British author Michael Moorcock brings up the term "multiverse" in 1963... I've read his books but not that one. As you can see this is a long thread coming to today... And the term "multiverse" cannot be casually dropped without summoning these other attachments.

there's a channel "Beyond the Trailer" which is a professional film reviewer and she expressed the same thing that I felt. What happened to me was I heard "this is the best multiverse movie" and that is exactly like a spoiler, that point should be discovered by the viewer for themselves as they watch. It's not something you hammer into place before someone watches the movie because it loads up a lot of expectations on the back of the movie. It's okay to say it after everyone has seen the movie, it's hard to imagine but it will guarantee disappointment if this expectation is set up before someone sees the movie. Yes it's an impossibility to imagine that other timeline of disappointment. "Best multiverse movie" ? it is like comparing it to 5 seasons of a great sci-fi show that slowly laid out foundation for a multiverse backstory and oh it's like saying it tops 10 years of movies that tie together in subtle yet substantial ways that finally cumulate in a once in a generation event at the cinemas... No do not casually drop the term "multiverse" to someone who've been aware of it for 20 years if not longer since "string theory" has become pop culture. LoL let me turn rant mode off... lol

Mannygogou

I can't wait to watch. I try to watch it in the VLC player which will allow me to crop. I have it on now...

Mannygogou

No, you can resize the video though

Verowak

Ahh, I can see it being a disappointment if people described it differently than what you saw. I went into this with 0 information about it, which was nice! I'm glad you got to enjoy it in the end though, it's really a fantastic movie!!

Verowak

does the chrome picture in picture allow cropping?, because that would be great...

Mannygogou

Yay! so it seems you liked it 🙂 I was disappointed when I first saw it because people gave descriptions that didn't match what I saw... But then I watched a therapist watch the movie and then I've seen it many times now and I like it much better 😄
